O sun of Baghdad, I am lovesick,

since your affection and kindness have died.

I fell in love with the sun—who has seen a man

whose heart, O people, is enamored of the sun?

I said, when I no longer received your letters,

as was your custom, while time was in harmony:

Oh, if only the winds were a maidservant,

running our errands and coming and going!

Would that my heart had never existed, for I have suffered because of it.

It conceals its pounding, and sometimes it quivers.

It raves of a pampered, delicate gazelle,

dark-lipped, wrapped in the robe of beauty.

A guileless gazelle adorned by an earring—

no, rather, the earring has been adorned by him.

Beauty and splendor obeyed him, and so

conceit has puffed him up with self-admiration.

Fates have barred the sight of him.

Would that ruin had overtaken those fates!

O moon through whom darkness was dispelled,

O pearl no shell has concealed,

O paradise whose inhabitant never dies,

every inward thought turns toward you.
