مُفرَداًalone يَبكيweeps عَلىover شَجَنِهhis sorrow
O stranger dwelling far from his homeland,
O stranger far from home
Alone, weeping over his sorrow.
Weeping alone for what is gone
شَفَّهُwore him down ماwhat شَفَّنيwore me down فَبَكىso he wept
كُلُّناall of us يَبكيweeps عَلىfor سَكَنِهhis beloved
What wore me down wore him down, so he wept;
Another's sorrow moved him so
Each of us weeps for his beloved.
We all weep for our home

And indeed, the heart's sorrow was increased
And yet his heart was pierced with pain
By a bird weeping upon its branch.
A bird that weeps what it has lost
كُلَّماwhenever جَدَّgrew intense البُكاءُthe weeping بِهِin it

Whenever its weeping grew intense,
The more he wept the more he pined
Illnesses crept into its body.
Sickness crept through his flesh and bones
