    وَزادَني بُعدُ داري عَنكُمُ شَغَفا

    O dwelling of Fawz, you have indeed bequeathed me wasting sickness;

And my home's distance from you has deepened my passion.

How long shall I be anguished by remembering you?

At evening and morning I am lovesick, distraught, and ailing.

I find no rest, nor do I ever forget you,

Nor do I see the anguish of this love dispelled.

Since parting from you, I have tasted no life that pleased me,

Nor have I seen your equal or anyone to take your place.

I truly marvel at a heart that loves you,

Yet has seen neither kindness nor gentleness from you.

    إِنَّ الشَقِيَّ الَّذي يَشقى بِمَن عَرَفا

    Were it not for my ill fortune, I would not have known you;

Truly wretched is the one who suffers through someone he has known.

Since parting from you, I have kept raving about you,

As though your remembrance had been set fast in my heart.

Would that I knew—though 'would that' brings no relief—

Whether what once came from you, all that has passed, will return.

Turn your heart away, O Abbas,

From her, and love's anguish will turn away from you.

If my heart could forget them, I would forget them,

But, by God, my heart has grown attached to them.

I complain to you of what ails me, O my tormentor,

And of what I endure, though I cannot describe it.

O my soul's care, O my hearing, O my sight,

How long will love for you remain clinging to my heart?

I did not know what worry was or what anguish was,

Until I drank from love's cup, scooping from it.

Its heat surged within my breast and burst into flame,

As though it were a fire fed with palm fronds.

Passion went round all God's servants,

Until it passed by me among them and stopped.

If one day I deny my passion to bury it

In my breast, my tears betray me, confessing it.

I have never met anyone offering a description of love

Without finding that what I suffer surpasses what he described.

My heart spends the morning fused with this love,

Held fast; at evening love enfolds me.

What do you think of a youth whose affliction has lasted so long,

Terror-stricken in love, fearing he may perish?

O Fawz, how can I be with you, when the dwelling has borne

Me far from you, and the soul's departure draws near?

I said, when I saw death making for me,

And its summoner almost called to me—or had called:

I die of longing, and shall never meet you.

O my heartbreak! Then O my longing, and O my grief!
