أَياO مَنزِلاًdwelling لاnot أَبتَغيI seek ذِكرَmention of أَهلِهِits inhabitants
أَيا مَنزِلاً لا أَبتَغي ذِكرَ أَهلِهِ
وَإِنand though كُنتُI am مَشغوفاًenthralled بِذِكرِهِمُby their memory صَبّاlovesick
وَإِن كُنتُ مَشغوفاً بِذِكرِهِمُ صَبّا
O dwelling, I do not wish to mention its inhabitants,
O dwelling, I do not seek to mention its people
though I am lovesick, enthralled by their memory.
Even if I am obsessed with their memory, morning and night
أَزورُكَI visit you أَستَشفيI seek healing لِقَلبِيَfor my heart مِنfrom جَوىًburning grief
أَزورُكَ أَستَشفي لِقَلبِيَ مِن جَوىً
وكَربٍand anguish أُقاسيهِI endure it فَيُحدِثُso it brings ليto me كَرباanguish
وكَربٍ أُقاسيهِ فَيُحدِثُ لي كَربا
I visit you, seeking healing for my heart from burning grief
I visit you, to heal my heart
and anguish I endure, yet it brings me anguish.
From anguish that I suffer, so it brings me more anguish
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جَنَتshe commits ذَنباًa fault تَلَمَّستُI seek out عُذرَهاher excuse
إِذا ما جَنَت ذَنباً تَلَمَّستُ عُذرَها
فَإِنso if لَمnot أَجِدI find عُذراًan excuse غَفَرتُI forgive لَهاher الذَنباthe fault
فَإِن لَم أَجِد عُذراً غَفَرتُ لَها الذَنبا
Whenever she commits a fault, I seek an excuse for her;
When it commits a sin, I look for its excuse
and if I find no excuse, I forgive her the fault.
If I cannot find an excuse, I forgive it for the sin
