O Abu al-Fadl, generous in sincere friendship,

Why does Fawz say that you are aloof?

Fawz wrote in her letter, saying,

    with both reproach and tenderness:

We did not tire of you when you tired of us, but

you, beloved, are one who delights in novelty.

And so the fickle one, among all people,

is quick to draw near and turn away.

Fawz, by God, I have not tired, nor have I been

a sincere friend to anyone other than you.

O sleepers around me, may your rest be pleasant!

Indeed, my side lies apart from my bed.
