My state and yours, in what lies between us, are a wonder.
My state and your state between us is strange
You are called the sick one, yet my heart bears the pain.
You complain though my heart bears the pain
نَفسيmy soul تَقيكَshields you مِنَfrom المَكروهِharm طائِعَةًwillingly

My soul willingly shields you from harm.
My soul protects you from harm willingly
May love bring you joy—a love unshared.
Let affection bring you ease, undivided care
أَقَمتَyou stayed بِالكُرهِunwillingly لِلشَكوىbecause of illness مُجاوِرَناdwelling beside us
وَلَوand if تَخَلَّصتَyou recovered مِنfrom شَكواكَyour ailment لَمwould not تُقِمyou stay
You stayed unwillingly as our neighbor because of illness;
You dwell with discontent, constant in plaint
and had you recovered from your ailment, you would not have stayed.
Were you free of your grief, you would not remain
فَلَيتَكَif only you الدَهرَforever ليto me جارٌa neighbor أُجاوِرُهُI dwell beside him
وَكانَand were ماwhat بِكَin you بيin me مِنof ذَلِكَthat السَقَمِillness
If only you were forever my neighbor, with me dwelling beside you,
Would that you were, for time, a neighbor dear
and the sickness afflicting you were mine.
And what of you in me were of that illness clear
