بِأَبيwith my father as ransom مَنthe one who ضَنَّbegrudged عَنيfrom me بِالسَلامwith a greeting
وَلَوىand delayed payment of دَينيthe debt owed to me وَلَمand did not يَرعَhonor الذِمامthe bond of honor
May my father be ransom for her who begrudged me a greeting,
By my father who was stingy with greetings to me
And delayed paying what she owed me, and did not honor our bond,
And twisted my religion and did not restrain the blame,
وَكَوىand seared قَلبيmy heart بِماwith what أَسمَعَنيshe made me hear
مِنof كَلامٍwords وَقعُهُits impact وَقعُthe impact of السِهامthe arrows
And seared my heart with what she made me hear:
And wounded my heart with what I heard from him
Words whose impact was that of arrows.
Of words whose impact was like arrows,
إِنَّماonly أَبكيI weep عَلىfor جارِيَةٍa young woman
قادَتِshe led القَلبَthe heart إِلَيهاto her بِزِمامwith a rein
I weep only for a young woman
I only cry for a neighbor girl
Who led my heart to her with a rein.
Who led my heart to her by its reins,
حَسَدَتنيshe begrudged me نَظرَةًa glance فيat وَجهِهاher face
إِذwhen جَلَسناwe sat فَاِستَحَثَّتso she urged haste لِلقِيامto rise
She begrudged me a glance at her face
She envied me a glance at her face
When we sat together, and urged us to rise.
When we sat so she hastened to stand,
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said ياO اِزدَجِرkeep away عَنّاfrom us فَماfor there is nothing
بَينَناbetween us إِلّاexcept سَلامٌa greeting بِسَلامin return for a greeting
Then she said, 'You there, keep away from us, for there is nothing
Then she said, O turn away from us for between us
Between us but a greeting for a greeting.'
Is only greetings with greetings.
بَلَّغوهاthey told her باطِلاًa falsehood فَاِنصَرَفَتso turned away
نَفسُهاher soul عَنّيfrom me بِظَنٍّwith suspicion وَاِتِّهامand accusation
They told her a falsehood, and away turned
They wrongly told her so she turned
Her soul from me, with suspicion and accusation.
Her soul from me in suspicion and blame.
لَيتَif only حَظّيmy share مِنكِfrom you ياO سَيِّدَتيmy lady
نَظرَةٌa glance أَنظُرُهاI cast it (a glance) فيin كُلِّevery عامyear
If only my share from you, O my lady,
Would that my share of you, Mistress, were
Were one glance I could cast each year.
A glance I can look at each year.
