أَلبَسَهُ الشَوقُ تَباريحَهُ

أَلبَسَهُ الشَوقُ تَباريحَهُ

فَعِندَهُ هَمٌّ وَتَعذيبُ

فَعِندَهُ هَمٌّ وَتَعذيبُ

Longing clothed him in its torments;

Longing has clothed him in its garments

so he is beset by sorrow and torment.

So he is beset with worry and torment

وَأَوقَدَ الشَوقُ عَلى قَلبِهِ

وَأَوقَدَ الشَوقُ عَلى قَلبِهِ

ناراً فَفي الأَحشاءِ تَلهيبُ

ناراً فَفي الأَحشاءِ تَلهيبُ

And longing kindled upon his heart

And longing has kindled in his heart

a fire, so his innards are ablaze.

A fire, so within his breast there is burning

لَيسَ بِسَمّاعٍ لِمَن لامَهُ

لَيسَ بِسَمّاعٍ لِمَن لامَهُ

إِنَّ الَّذي أَبلاهُ مَحبوبُ

إِنَّ الَّذي أَبلاهُ مَحبوبُ

He gives no ear to anyone who blames him;

He pays no heed to those who blame him

indeed, the one who afflicted him is beloved.

For she who tries him is his beloved

وَإِنَّما هاجَ لَهُ شَوقَهُ

وَإِنَّما هاجَ لَهُ شَوقَهُ

طَيِّبَةٌ يَحظى بِها الطيبُ

طَيِّبَةٌ يَحظى بِها الطيبُ

And what stirred his longing was only

Rather, his longing has stirred for her

a fragrant woman whom perfume is fortunate to adorn.

A sweet one, who is the due of the noble
