Lo, Fawz has carried off Abu al-Fadl's reason,

And I never thought a person could live without reason.

To God I complain that Fawz is ungenerous,

She torments me with her promises and her delays.

and that I see how all my family and hers

would rejoice if my cord were parted from hers.

So, Lord, let no one who envies us gloat over us,

who watches us—whether of Fawz's family or my own.

And there is nothing suspect between us to warrant spying,

Nor is someone like her accused of wrongdoing, nor someone like me.

And I indeed honor Fawz's rights, and guard

her against the eyes of spiteful men versed in deceit.

And she and I, even as love has worn us thin,

are indeed people of honor untainted by folly.

And I, concealing my love for her though it has become known,

am like a fool beating a drum beneath his robe.
