بَكَيتُI wept غَداةَthe morning بِنتِyou departed بِدَمعِwith tears عَينٍan eye
لَهُbecause of it قَرِحَتgrew sore جُفونيmy eyelids وَالمَآقيand the eye-corners
I wept the morning you departed, with tears from my eye;
I wept one morning with tears from my eyes
From those tears, my eyelids and eye-corners grew sore.
They blistered my eyelids and sights of woe
وَأَقلَقَنيand it troubled me فِراقُكِyour parting إِذwhen دَعانيit called me

And your parting troubled me when it called me
And your parting distressed me when suddenly
Suddenly to my doom—so when shall we meet?
It called to my days, so when is our reunion?
لَقَدindeed هَدَّshattered الهَوىlove بَدَنيmy body وَأَضنىand wore down

Love has indeed shattered my body, and worn down
Passion has emaciated my body and grieved
By worry is my heart, through my long yearning.
My heart with prolonged yearning
أُعَلِّلُI console بِالمُنىwith hopes نَفسيmyself وَماand not ليfor me
سِوىexcept اليَأسِdespair الَّذيwhich فيهِin it اِحتِراميmy death
I console myself with hopes, yet I have
I blame my soul for pining, yet I have
Nothing but despair, wherein lies my death.
Naught but despair in which lies my solace
