بَكِending of 'your letter' (feminine addressee) ياO ظَلومُZalum (name) وَأَستَزيرُهand I ask it to visit
I weep and seek to be alone with your letter,
I weep and become restless,
O Zalum, and ask it to visit me.
Weep, O unjust one, and I will console him,
فَتَحَرَّجيso refrain scrupulously مِنfrom حَبسِهِwithholding it
عَمَّنfrom one who يَطولُis prolonged بِهِthrough it سُرورُهhis joy
So shrink from withholding it
So you may feel remorseful for imprisoning him,
from one whose joy it prolongs.
He whose happiness is prolonged.
يَأتيcomes الكِتابُthe letter عَنِfrom الحَبيthe beloved (word begins here)
بِcompletion of 'the beloved' مُمَثَّلاًembodied فيهِin it ضَميرُهhis innermost feelings
The letter comes from the beloved,
The letter comes from the beloved
his innermost feelings embodied in it.
With him represented in it, his conscience,
يَحكيresembles السَرابَthe mirage بِوَعدِهِin its promise
ماnot يَنقَضيcomes to an end أَبَداًever غُرورُهits deception
In its promise it resembles a mirage;
It tells of a mirage with his promise,
its deception never ends.
His deception never ceases.
فَيَسُرُّنيso it gladdens me وَيَهيجُand it arouses ليfor me
حُزناًsorrow إِذاwhen قَلَّتare few سُطورُهits lines
So it gladdens me and stirs in me
It makes me happy and stirs in me,
sorrow when its lines are few.
Sorrow, when his lines are few.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَجِبتُI marveled لِبُخلِهِat his stinginess
عَنّيfrom me بِشَيءٍwith something لاnot يَضيرُهharms him
And I have indeed marveled at his withholding
And I am amazed at his stinginess,
from me something that does him no harm.
From me, of what does not harm him.
