قَدindeed كُنتُI was أَبكيI weep وَأَنتِwhile you (feminine) راضِيَةٌpleased
حِذارَfor fear of هَذاthis الصُدودِthe rejection وَالغَضَبِand the anger
I used to weep while you were pleased,
I used to weep while you were content
for fear of this rejection and anger.
Beware of this aloofness and anger
فَاليَومَso today إِذwhen حَلَّcame to pass ياO ظَلومُcruel one الَّذيthat which
حاذَرتُI feared أَلقىI meet الوَفاةَdeath عَنfrom كَثَبِclose proximity
So today, O cruel one, now that there has come what
But today, O unjust one, when it came
I feared, I face death close at hand.
I feared I would die in a moment
إِنif دامَlasts ذاthis الهَجرُthe estrangement ياO ظَلومُcruel one وَلاand may it not
دامَlast فَماthen no ليfor me فيin العَيشِlife مِنany (emphatic) أَرَبِdesire
If this estrangement lasts, O cruel one—and may it not
If this estrangement persists, O unjust one
last—then I have no desire to live.
And it persists, I have no joy in life
