عَتَبتُI reproached عَلىagainst نَفسيmyself لِعَتبيfor my reproach عَلَيكُمُagainst you
وَماand not ضَرَّharmed غَيريanyone other than me فَاِعلَميso know ذَلِكَthat العَتبُthe reproach
I reproached myself for reproaching you.
I blamed myself for blaming you
And the reproach harmed no one but me—know that.
And it did not harm anyone else, so know that, that blame
فَهاso behold أَناI هَذاthis one قَدindeed رَضيتُI consented تَحَمُّلاًbearing
لَذَنبِكِfor your fault لاno لَمdid not تُذنِبيyou commit a fault بَلrather لِيَmine الذَنبُthe fault
So here I am, having consented to bear
So here I am, I have accepted to endure
your fault—no, you did no wrong; rather, the fault is mine.
For your sin, not because you sinned, but because it was my sin
أَباحَviolated حِمىthe sanctuary of قَلبيmy heart الهَوىpassion فَأَذلَّهُand so humbled it
أَلاah لَيتَwould that لَمnot أُخلَقI was created وَلَمand not يُخلَقِwas created الحُبُّlove
Passion violated my heart’s sanctuary and humbled it.
Passion permitted the sanctuary of my heart, so it degraded it
Ah, would that neither I nor love had ever been created.
Oh, if only I were not created and love was not created
