I knew full well, O cruel—

—one, that your union would not endure.

Once I was envied for having you,

for a time, while your course was true.

Until you broke the promises between us—

and one who knows a covenant breaks it knowingly.

    Do you remember our conversation,

while the night was black, impenetrably dark,

    when we, in love, defied

the words of slanderers—and all who reproached us?
