إِنّي وَضَعتُ الحُبَ مَوضِعَهُ

إِنّي وَضَعتُ الحُبَ مَوضِعَهُ

وَاِحتَلتُ حيلَةَ صاحِبِ الدُنيا

وَاِحتَلتُ حيلَةَ صاحِبِ الدُنيا

I have indeed put love in its proper place,

I have put love in its proper place,

And used the stratagem of a man of the world.

And adopted the ways of the man of the world.

وَإِذا سُئِلتُ عَنِ الَّتي شَغَفَت

وَإِذا سُئِلتُ عَنِ الَّتي شَغَفَت

قَلبي وَكَلتُهُمُ إِلى أُخرى

قَلبي وَكَلتُهُمُ إِلى أُخرى

And whenever I was asked about the woman who captivated

When asked about her who captivated my heart,

My heart, I referred them to another woman.

And whom I complained to them about another.

ما زِلتُ أُكذِبُهُم وَأَكتُمُهُم

ما زِلتُ أُكذِبُهُم وَأَكتُمُهُم

حَتّى شُهِرتُ بِغَيرِ مَن أَهوى

حَتّى شُهِرتُ بِغَيرِ مَن أَهوى

I kept lying to them and concealing the truth from them,

I have always lied to them and concealed from them,

Until I became known as the lover of someone other than the one I love.

Until I became known for loving someone other than whom I love.
