أَصبَحتُI have come to أَذكُرُI recall بِالرَيحانِthrough sweet basil رائِحَةًa fragrance
أَصبَحتُ أَذكُرُ بِالرَيحانِ رائِحَةً
مِنهاof her فَلِلنَفسِso, for the soul بِالرَيحانِin sweet basil إيناسُsolace
مِنها فَلِلنَفسِ بِالرَيحانِ إيناسُ
I have come to recall, through sweet basil, a fragrance
The fragrance of basil reminds me
Of her; thus the soul finds solace in sweet basil.
Of one whose name gives my soul solace
وَأَمنَحُand I bestow الياسَمينَjasmine البُغضَhatred مِنout of حَذَريmy fear
وَأَمنَحُ الياسَمينَ البُغضَ مِن حَذَري
عَلَيكِfor you إِذsince قيلَit was said ليto me شَطرُhalf اِسمِهِits name الياسُdespair
عَلَيكِ إِذ قيلَ لي شَطرُ اِسمِهِ الياسُ
And I bestow hatred on jasmine, out of my fear
Yet I shun the jasmine in my wariness
For you, since I was told that half its name is “despair.”
When told that within it lies half her name
