تَخَلَّصتُ مِمَّن لَم يَكُن ذا حَفيظَةٍ

تَخَلَّصتُ مِمَّن لَم يَكُن ذا حَفيظَةٍ

وَصِرتُ إِلى مَن لا يُغَيِّرُهُ حالُ

وَصِرتُ إِلى مَن لا يُغَيِّرُهُ حالُ

I freed myself from one who had no loyalty,

I have freed myself from one with no restraint

And turned to one whom no circumstance changes.

And come to one whom no condition can change

فَإِن كانَ قَطعُ الخالِ لَمّا تَعَطَّفَت

فَإِن كانَ قَطعُ الخالِ لَمّا تَعَطَّفَت

عَلى غَيرِها نَفسي فَقَد ظُلِمَ الخالُ

عَلى غَيرِها نَفسي فَقَد ظُلِمَ الخالُ

For if the break with al-Khāl came when affection stirred

If my devotion to another was disloyalty

In my soul for someone other than her, then al-Khāl has indeed been wronged.

To my friend, then my friend has been wronged
