أَهابُكِI fear you أَنto أَشكوI complain إِلَيكِto you وَلَيسَand there is no ليfor me
يدٌpower بِالَّذيover what أَلقىI endure وَأُخفيand I conceal مِنَof الوَجدِlonging
I fear to complain to you, yet I have no
I fear to complain to you, though I have no control over what I encounter and conceal of passion,
power over the longing I endure and conceal.
By Allah, I don’t conceal what I have of love for you, but you complain deliberately,
وَواللَهِand by God ماnot يَخفىis hidden الَّذيwhat بيwithin me مِنَof الهَوىlove
عَلَيكِfrom you وَلَكِنand yet تَشتَكينَyou complain عَلىwith عَمَدِdeliberate intent
And by God, the love within me is not hidden
I will be patient, not complain to you, and be content with your knowledge that I have been worn down by rejection.
from you, and yet you complain deliberately.
My mistress, for God's sake have mercy on me,
سَأَصبِرُI shall endure لاnot أَشكوI complain إِلَيكِto you وَأَكتَفيand I shall be content
بِعلمِكِwith your knowledge أَنّيthat I قَدalready بَليتُI have wasted away مِنَfrom الصَدِّrejection
I shall endure, not complain to you, and be content
Lighten my sorrows and bring near the fulfillment of promises.
with your knowing that rejection has worn me down.
Alas! My turning to the eastern side of Al-Mahdi's camp has exhausted my tears.
أَسَيِّدَتيO my lady بِاللَهِby God أَلاwill you not رَحِمتِنيyou pitied me
وَفَرَّقتِand you dispelled أَحزانيmy sorrows وَقَرَّبتِand you hastened فيin الوَعدِthe promise
O my lady, by God, will you not pity me
And I am thirsty, and the water is present, but there is no way to obtain it.
and dispel my sorrows and hasten your promise's fulfillment?
I did not fear that my demise would be at the hands of the dearest of all people to me.
أَلاbehold إِنَّماonly أَفنىexhausted الدُموعَthe tears تَلَفُّتيmy turning to gaze
إِلىtoward الجانِبِthe side الشَرقِيِّeastern مِنof عَسكَرِthe camp المَهديal-Mahdi
Ah, only my turning to gaze has exhausted my tears
If God's creation were with me, I would be lonely and desolate when she was absent.
toward the eastern side of al-Mahdi's camp.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَصاديsurely parched الجَوفِthe belly وَالماءُand the water حاضِرٌat hand
أَراهُI see it وَلَكِنand yet لاno سَبيلَway إِلىto الوِردِdrinking
And I am parched within, though water is close at hand;
I see it, and yet there is no way to drink.
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَخشىI feared أَنthat تَكونَwould be مَنيَّتيmy death
بِكَفِّat the hand of أَخَصِّthe closest of الناسِpeople كُلَّهُمُall of them عِنديto me
And I never feared that my death would be
at the hand of the dearest of all people to me.
وَلوand even if أَنَّthat خَلقthe creation of اللَهُGod عِنديwith me لَخِلتُنيI would surely think myself
إِذاif هيَshe غابَتwas absent موحِشاًdesolate خالِياًsolitary وَحديby myself
And even if all God's creation were with me, I would think myself,
if she were absent, desolate, solitary, alone.
