كَتَمتُI concealed وَمَنand the one whom أَهوىI love هَواناour love فَلَمso we did not نَبُحdisclose
وَقَدand indeed كانَتِwere الأَسرارُthe secrets بِاللَمحِthrough a glance تَظهَرُappearing
I and the one I love concealed our love; we did not speak of it.
Yet secrets once showed themselves in a glance.
فَنَحنُso we كِلاناboth مُقصَدٌare stricken فيin فُؤادِهِhis heart
مِنَfrom الشَوقِlonging نارٌa fire حَرُّهاits heat يَتَسَعَّرُblazes
So each of us is stricken; in each heart
a fire of longing burns with mounting heat.
فَلاso neither أَناI أُبديreveal ماwhat أُجِنُّI conceal وَلاnor الَّذيthe one who
بِهِin him مِثلُlike ماwhat بيis in me لِلمَخافَةِfor fear يَذكُرُspeaks
I do not reveal what I conceal, nor does the one
who feels as I do speak of it, for fear.
فَياso how عَجَباstrange مِنّيof me وَمِنهاand of her وَصَبرُناand our patience
عَلىover ماwhat نُلاقيwe endure كَيفَhow نَصبوwe yearn وَنصبِرُand remain patient
How strange it is, for her and me, that we endure
what we suffer—how can we yearn and yet be patient?
وَماand our صَبرُناpatience أَلّاthat we do not نَبوحَdisclose فَنَشتَكيand then lament
سَرائِرَsecrets ماwhat يُخفيconceals الضَميرُthe heart وَيُضمِرُand hides within
Our patience in keeping silent, rather than speaking and lamenting
the secrets the heart conceals and holds within,
مَلالاًfrom weariness وَلَكِنbut نَتَّقيwe guard against قَولَthe words of كاشِحٍa spiteful person
يُبَلِّغُhe relays عَنّاabout us ماwhat نَقولُwe say وَيُظهِرُand exposes
is not born of weariness; we guard against the words of a spiteful person
who would repeat and expose what we say.
فَنَكتُمُso we conceal ماwhat يُخفيconceals الضَميرُthe heart تَحَفُّظاًout of caution
وَخَيرُand the best الهَوىlove ماis what كانَwas يُخفىconcealed وَيُستَرُand kept hidden
So, out of caution, we conceal what the heart keeps hidden;
the best love is love kept secret and veiled.
عَلىdespite أَنَّهُthat it يَبدوappears مِراراًat times مِنَfrom الفَتىthe young lover
طَوالِعُsigns إِنif هاجَstirs الفُؤادَthe heart التَذَكُّرُremembrance
Yet at times signs appear in a young lover
when remembrance stirs the heart:
إِذاwhen غَلَبَovercomes الصَبرَpatience البُكاءُweeping وَهُيِّجَتand are stirred
تَباريحَهُhis pangs فَالصَبُّthen the lover بِالذِكرِfor remembering يُعذَرُis excused
when weeping overcomes patience and awakens
his anguish, the lover is excused for remembering.
