ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful الوُدَّaffection إِذاwhen كانَis مَنthe one whom
ما أَحسَنَ الوُدَّ إِذا كانَ مَن
تَهواهُyou love him يَجزيrepays الوُدَّaffection بِالوُدِّwith affection
تَهواهُ يَجزي الوُدَّ بِالوُدِّ
How beautiful affection is when the one
How beautiful is love when the beloved
you love repays affection with affection.
Returns love with love!
وَأَنعَمَand how blissful العاشِقَthe lover فيin عَيشِهِhis life
وَأَنعَمَ العاشِقَ في عَيشِهِ
إِنif دامَremains مَنthe one whom يَهوىhe loves عَلىtrue to العَهدِthe pledge
إِن دامَ مَن يَهوى عَلى العَهدِ
And how blissful the lover is in his life,
How blissful then is the lover,
if the one he loves remains true to the pledge.
If constancy binds the beloved to their vow!
وَأَقبَحَand how ugly الوَصلَunion إِذاwhen لَمnot يَكُنis
وَأَقبَحَ الوَصلَ إِذا لَم يَكُن
يوفيis faithful الَّذيthe one whom يَهواهُhe loves him بِالوَعدِto the promise
يوفي الَّذي يَهواهُ بِالوَعدِ
And how ugly is union when
How ugly is union when the lover
the one he loves does not keep the promise.
Fails to fulfill the promises made!
وَالحُبُّand love مَنwhoever يَعلَقbecomes attached بِهِto it لَمhas not يَزَلceased
وَالحُبُّ مَن يَعلَق بِهِ لَم يَزَل
فيin طاعَةِobedience to الأَحزانِthe sorrows وَالجَهدِand hardship
في طاعَةِ الأَحزانِ وَالجَهدِ
And love—whoever becomes attached to it remains
And love - whoever clings to it - will always
in thrall to sorrows and hardship.
Obey sorrows and hardship.
