سَرىtraveled by night طَيفُthe apparition of فَوزٍFawz آخِرَat the end of اللَيلِthe night بِالطَفِّin al-Taff
فَنَحّىso banished الكَرىsleep عَنّيfrom me وَأَغفَتand she dozed وَلَمand did not أُغفِI doze
Fawz's apparition came at night's end in al-Taff,
and banished sleep from me; she dozed, but I did not.
وَباتَand spent the night الهَوىLove ليagainst me حاسِراًbaring عَنfrom ذِراعِهِhis arm
يُلَهِّبُhe inflames فيin الصَدرِthe breast الهُمومَthe cares وَلاand does not يُطفيquench
And Love spent the night with his arm bared against me,
kindling cares within my breast, and never quenching them.
وَبِتُّand I spent the night كَأَنّيas though I بِالثُرَيّاfrom the Pleiades مُعَلَّقٌsuspended
أُناشِدُI implore مَنthe One who يَدريis aware وَيَعلَمُand knows ماwhat أُخفيI conceal
And I spent the night as though hanging from the Pleiades,
imploring the One who knows and understands what I conceal.
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat خَلقَthe creatures of اللَهِGod رامواthey sought بِوَصفِهِمwith their descriptions
تَباريحَthe agonies of ماwhat بيis in me قَصَّرواthey would fall short عَنof مَدىthe extent of الوَصفِdescription
And were God's creatures to try to describe
the agonies I bear, they would fall short of a full description.
فَياso, O بَرحَthe anguish of أَحزانيmy sorrows وَياand O دَرَّthe flow of عَبرَتيmy tear
وَياand O وَيلَتيmy woe ماذاwhat لَقيتُI have endured وَياand O لَهفيmy anguish
Oh, the anguish of my sorrows, the streaming of my tears!
And woe is me—what I have endured! Oh, my anguish!
أَلَيسَis it not بِحَسبيenough for me أَنthat أَبيعَI sell كَرامَةًdignity
بِذُلٍّfor humiliation وَأَنand that أُعطىI am given المُبَهرَجَdebased coin بِالصِرفِfor pure coin
Is it not enough that I sell my dignity
for humiliation, and receive debased coin in exchange for pure coin?
وَلَوand if أَنصَفَتنيshe treated me fairly فيin المَوَدَّةِaffection وَالهَوىand love
رَضيتُI would be content وَيُرضينيand pleases me أَقَلُّless مِنَthan النِصفِhalf
And if she treated me fairly in affection and love,
I would be content; less than half would satisfy me.
فَياso, O رَبُّLord أَلِّفbring harmony بَينَbetween قَلبيmy heart وَقَلبِهاand her heart
لِكَيلاlest تَعَدّىshe passes بيby me أَماميahead of me وَلاnor خَلفيbehind me
O Lord, unite my heart and hers,
so that she may not pass me by, either ahead of me or behind me.
وَياand O رَبُّLord صَبِّرنيgrant me patience عَلىwith ماwhat أَصابَنيhas befallen me
فَأَنتَfor You الَّذيthe One who تَكفيYou suffice وَأَنتَand You الَّذيthe One who تُعفيYou spare
And O Lord, grant me patience with what has befallen me,
for You are the One who suffices, and You are the One who spares.
وَياand O رَبُّLord عَذِّبهاtorment her بِماwith what بيis in me مِنَof الهَوىlove
وَلاbut not كَالَّذيlike that with which عَذَّبتَYou tormented قارونَQarun بِالخَسفِwith the earth's engulfing
And O Lord, torment her with the love that torments me,
but not as You punished Qarun by sinking him into the earth.
أَصُدُّI turn away إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle مَرَّpassed بيby me بَعضُsome of أَهلِهاher kin
بِوَجهيwith my face وَتَأبىbut refuse المُقلَتانِthe two eyes سِوىanything but الذَرفِshedding tears
I turn aside whenever some of her kin pass me,
averting my face, while my two eyes insist on shedding tears.
يُبينُspeaks plainly لِسانيmy tongue عَنabout فُؤاديmy heart وَرُبَّماand sometimes
أَسِرُّconceals لِسانيmy tongue ماwhat يَبوحُspeaks openly بِهِof it طَرفيmy gaze
My tongue gives voice to my heart, and sometimes
my tongue conceals what my gaze reveals.
فَلَوthen if قامَstood خَلقُthe creatures of اللَهِGod صَفّاًin a rank وَأُفرِدَتand she were set apart
I would surely support her وَحديby myself وَمِلتُand I would turn aside عَنِfrom الصَفِّthe rank
If God's creatures stood in a rank and she were set apart,
I alone would take her side and turn away from the rank.
I seek protection for you أَنlest تَشقَيyou suffer بِقَتليby killing me فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
أَخافُI fear عَلَيكِfor you اللَهَGod إِنif سِمتِنيyou inflict on me حَتفيmy death
I pray you be spared the misery of killing me, for I
fear God for you if you inflict death upon me.
فَإِنso if شِئتِyou wish حَرَّمتُI would forbid myself النِساءَwomen سِواكُمُexcept you
بِحَلفٍby a pledge وَأَيمانٍand oaths وَحُقَّand is due لَكُمto you حِلفيmy pledge
So, if you wish, I will forbid myself women other than you,
with a pledge and oaths—and my pledge is your due.
وَماand not بيof concern to me دَميmy blood بَلrather ليfor me إِذاif مُتُّI die راحَةٌrest
وَلَكِنand yet لِكَيماso that تَسلَميyou may be safe فَاِسمَعيso listen هَتفيmy cry
And my blood is not my concern; rather, if I die, I shall find rest,
but so that you may be safe, listen to my cry.
فَلَولاكِfor, were it not for you ماnot زَيَّنتُI adorned نَفسيmyself بِزينَةٍwith finery
وَلَولاكِand were it not for you ماnot أَلَّفتُI joined حَرفاًa letter إِلىto حَرفِa letter
Were it not for you, I would not have adorned myself with finery,
and were it not for you, I would not have joined letter to letter.
إِذاwhen القَلبُthe heart أَوماmade as if أَنto يَطيرَfly صَبابَةًin longing
ضَرَبتُI struck لَهُfor it صَدريmy breast وَأَلزَمتُهُand I pressed against it كَفّيmy palm
Whenever my heart makes to fly away in longing,
I strike my breast to restrain it and press my palm against it.
يَهُمُّit makes ready فَلَولاso were it not أَنَّthat صَدريmy breast حِجابُهُits barrier
لَطارَit would surely fly دِراكاًin rapid succession أَوor تَحامَلَit would struggle forward بِالجَدفِby flapping its wings
It strains to fly; were my breast not its barrier,
it would fly on and on, or struggle onward with flapping wings.
كَأَنَّas though جَناحَيهِits two wings إِذاwhen هاجَsurged شَوقُهُits longing
يَداthe two hands of قَينَةٍa singing-girl هَوجاءَfrenzied تَضرِبُbeating بِالدُفِّon the frame drum
It is as though its two wings, when its longing surges,
were the hands of a frenzied singing-girl beating a frame drum.
أَلاah هَلis there إِلىto قَلبيmy heart سَبيلٌa way لَعَلَّنيperhaps I
أُمِرُّI subject جَناحَيهِits two wings عَلىto القَصِّclipping وَالنَتفِand plucking
Ah, is there a way to my heart, so that perhaps I
might subject its two wings to clipping and plucking?
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذَكَرتُI mentioned الهَجرَseparation لِلقَلبِto the heart لَمdid not يَزَلcease
يُعَذِّبُنيit torments me بِالسَيرِby moving on طَوراًat times وَبِالوَقفِand by stopping
Whenever I speak to my heart of separation, it never stops
tormenting me, now by moving on, now by standing still.
يُطاوِعُنيit obeys me حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen قُلتُI said قَدalready أَنىhas ripened
وَتابَعَنيand it followed me لاشَكَّwithout doubt مالَit inclined إِلىtoward الصَدفِaversion
It obeys me until I say, 'At last it has come round
and followed me, beyond doubt'—then it turns away.
أُقاتِلُI fight عَنin defense of قَلبيmy heart الهَوىLove فَكَأَنَّنيso it is as though I
وَإِيّاهُand he نَزّالانِtwo combatants فيat مُلتَقىthe meeting of الزَحفِadvancing armies
I fight Love in defense of my heart, as though I
and he were two combatants where the advancing armies meet.
لِأَيَّةِfor what حالٍreason يَستَحِلُّdeems lawful الهَوىLove دَميmy blood
لِأَعذُرَهُso I may excuse him أُفٍfie! لِهَذاon this الهَوىlove أُفِّfie!
On what grounds does Love deem my blood lawful to shed,
that I might excuse him? Fie on this love, fie!
وَأُقسِمُand I swear ماnot بيin me عَنهُagainst him ضَعفٌweakness بِحالَةٍin any circumstance
وَلَوand if قَدindeed تَراءىhe appeared ليto me لَماsurely not كُنتُI would be أَستَعفيseeking exemption
And I swear I am in no way too weak to face him;
were he to appear before me, I would not ask to be spared.
