And many a man, in his ignorance, blamed me for loving brown-skinned women,

himself besotted with fair-skinned women and obstinate in argument.

So, when he blamed me, I said in reply:

“Who would equate camphor with musk?”

I tore away the veils of love for dark-skinned women,

and the lover’s pleasure lies in tearing them away.

And I said to my soul, “Be reckless in love,

for repose lies only in recklessness.”
