إِنّيindeed I لَأَحسَبُI certainly think وَالأَقدارُand the fates غالِبَةٌprevailing
أَنّيthat I وَإِيّاكِand you مِثلُlike الروحِthe spirit فيin الجَسَدِthe body
I used to think—though fate prevails—
That you and I were like the spirit within the body.
حَتّىuntil سَعَتshe schemed بَينَناbetween us ياO فَوزُFawz ساعِيَةٌa female tale-bearer
مَشهورَةٌnotorious عُرِفَتshe was known بِالنَفثِfor blowing فيupon العُقَدِthe knots
Until, O Fawz, a tale-bearer came between us,
Notorious, known for blowing upon knots.
فَلَمso she did not تَزَلcease بِالرُقىwith incantations حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed تَرَكَتshe left
ماwhat بَينَناbetween us مِثلَlike حَربِthe war of الثَورِthe bull وَالأَسَدِand the lion
She kept up her incantations until she made
What lay between us like the war of the bull and the lion.
لَقَدindeed نَهَيتُكُمُI warned you عَنهاagainst her وَقُلتُand I said لَكُمto you
فيهاabout her مَقالَthe words of شَفيقِone compassionate القَولِin speech مُجتَهِدِearnest
I had indeed warned you against her, and spoken to you
About her with the words of a caring, earnest adviser:
ياO فَوزُFawz لاdo not تَسمَعيyou listen مِنfrom قَولِthe words of واشِيَةٍa female slanderer
لَوif صادَفَتshe came upon كَبِديmy liver عَضَّتshe would bite عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver
O Fawz, do not heed the words of a slanderess
Who, had she found my liver, would have bitten into it.
إِنif كُنتُI had قُلتُI said الَّذيwhat قالَتshe said فَأَلبَسَنيthen may He clothe me
رَبّيmy Lord سَرابيلَgarments نارٍof fire جَمَّةَmany العَدَدِin number
If I said what she claimed, then may I be clothed
By my Lord in garments of fire, many in number.
ماnot كُنتُI had قُلتُI said لَكُمto you شَيئاًanything يَسوؤُكُمُwould distress you
وَلاnor مَدَدتُI stretched out إِلىtoward ماwhat تَكرَهينَyou hate يَديmy hand
I never said anything to you that would distress you,
Nor stretched my hand toward what you hate.
وَقَدand indeed غَنيتُI lived زَماناًfor a time لاnot أَظُنُّكُمُI think you
مِمَنamong those who يُصدِّقُbelieves فيناabout us قَولَthe words of ذيone possessing حَسَدِenvy
And long I lived, not thinking you
Among those who believe an envious person's words about us.
أَمّاas for الهَوىlove فَهوَthen it is شَيءٌa thing لاno خَفاءَconcealment بِهِin it
شَتّانَhow far apart بَينَbetween سَبيلِthe path of الغَيِّerror وَالرَشَدِand right guidance
As for love, it is something that cannot be hidden;
How far apart are the paths of error and right guidance!
إِنَّindeed المُحِبّينَlovers قَومٌa people بَينَbetween أَعيُنِهِمtheir eyes
وَسمٌa mark مِنَof الحُبِّlove لاnot يَخفىis hidden عَلىfrom أَحَدِanyone
Indeed, lovers are a people: between their eyes
Lies a mark of love, hidden from no one.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَحبِسُI surely restrain نَفسيmy soul أَنthat تَعودَit returns لَكُمtoward you
إِلىto الَّذيwhat كانَwas مِنهاfrom it آخِرَthe end of الأَبَدِeternity
I shall surely keep my soul from renewing for you
What it once felt, for all eternity.
قَدalready كُنتُI had قُلتُI said لَكُمto you إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhenever اِنصَرَفَتit turns away
نَفسيmy soul عَنِfrom الشَيءِthe thing لَمdid not تَرجِعreturn وَلَمand did not تَكَدِcome close
I had already told you that, whenever
My soul turns from something, it neither returns nor even comes close.
