أَلَمDid ... not تَعلَميyou know ياO فَوزُFawz أَنّيthat I مُعَذَّبُtormented
بِحُبِّكُمُby love for you وَالحَينُand doom لِلمَرءِto a person يُجلَبُis brought
Did you not know, O Fawz, that I am tormented
by love for you—and doom is brought upon a man?
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was أَبكيكُمI weep for you بيَثرِبَin Yathrib مَرَّةًonce
وَكانَتand was مُنىthe hopes نَفسيof my soul مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth يَثرِبُYathrib
I once wept for you in Yathrib,
and of all the earth, Yathrib was my soul's desire.
I set my hopes on you حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle رَجَعتُمُyou returned
أَتانيcame to me صُدودٌrejection مِنكُمُfrom you وَتَجَنُّبُand avoidance
I cherished hopes of you until, when you returned,
rejection and avoidance came to me from you.
فَإِنso if ساءَكُمgrieves you ماwhat بيis upon me مِنَof الضُرِّsuffering فَاِرحَمواthen have mercy
وَإِنand if سَرَّكُمpleases you هَذاthis العَذابُtorment فَعَذِّبواthen torment
If the suffering I bear grieves you, then have mercy;
and if this torment pleases you, then torment me.
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مِمّاbecause of what كانَwas بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمُand between you
أُحَدِّثُI speak عَنكُمabout you مَنwhomever لَقيتُI met فَيَعجَبُand he marvels
So now, because of what passed between me and you,
I tell whomever I meet about you, and he marvels.
وَقَدand indeed قالَsaid ليto me ناسٌsome people تَحمَّلendure دَلالَهاher coyness
فَكُلُّfor every صَديقٍfriend سَوفَwill يَرضىbe pleased وَيَغضَبُand grow angry
Some people have said to me, 'Bear her coyness;
for every friend will be pleased and will grow angry.'
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَقلىI surely detest بَذلَthe giving غَيرِكِof anyone but you فَاِعلَميso know
وَبُخلُكِand your withholding فيin صَدريmy breast أَلَذُّsweeter وَأَطيَبُand more pleasing
And I truly detest another's generosity—know this—
and your withholding is sweeter and more pleasing within my breast.
وَإِنّيand indeed I أَرىI see مِنamong أَهلِthe members بَيتِكِof your house نُسوَةًwomen
شَبَبنَthey kindled لَناfor us فيin الصَدرِthe breast ناراًa fire تَلَهَّبُit blazes
And I see women from your household
who have kindled in our breast a blazing fire.
عَرَفنَthey recognized الهَوىlove مِنّاfrom us فَأَصبَحنَso they became حُسَّداًenvious
يُخَبِّرنَthey tell عَنّاabout us مَنwhoever يَجيءُcomes وَيَذهَبُand goes
They recognized our love and grew envious,
telling of us to everyone who comes and goes.
وَإِنّيand indeed I اِبتَلانيhas tested me اللَهُGod مِنكُمfrom among you بِخادِمةٍwith a maidservant
تُبَلِّغُكُمshe conveys to you عَنّيabout me الحَديثَthe news وَتَكذِبُand she lies
And God has tried me through a maid of yours,
who relays news of me to you and lies.
وَلَوand if أَصبَحَتshe began تَسعىstriving لِتوصِلَto connect بَينَناbetween us
سَعِدتُI would be happy وَأَدرَكتُand I would attain الَّذيthat which كُنتُI was أَطلُبُseeking
And if she began striving to bring us together,
I would be happy and attain what I had sought.
وَقَدand indeed ظَهَرَتhave appeared أَشياءُthings مِنكُمfrom you كَثيرَةٌmany
وَماand not كُنتُI was مِنكُمfrom you مِثلَهاtheir like أَتَرَقَّبُexpecting
Many things have come to light from you,
and I had never expected their like from you.
عَرَفتُI learned بِماthrough what جَرَّبتُI experienced أَشياءَthings جَمَّةًmany
وَلاand not يَعرِفُknows الأَشياءَthings إِلاexcept المُجَرِّبُone with experience
From what I have experienced, I have learned many things;
and none knows things but one who has experienced them.
وَليand I have يَومَon the day شَيَّعتُI accompanied الجِنازَةَthe funeral bier قِصَّةٌa tale
غَداةَon the morning بَداappeared البَدرُthe full moon الَّذيthat كانَwas يُحجَبُbeing veiled
And I have a tale from the day I followed the bier,
the morning the full moon that had been veiled appeared.
أَشَرتُI signaled إِلَيهاto her بِالبَنانِwith the fingertips فَأَعرَضَتso she turned away
تَبَسَّمُshe smiles طَوراًat times ثُمَّthen تَزويshe tightens her face فَتَقطِبُthen she frowns
I signaled to her with my fingertips, and she turned away,
smiling one moment, then drawing her face tight and frowning.
غَداةَon the morning رَأَيتُI saw الهاشِميَّةَthe Hashimite woman غُدوَةًearly in the morning
تَهادىswayed gracefully حَوالَيهاaround her مِنَof العينِthe wide-eyed ones رَبرَبُa herd of antelopes
That morning I saw the Hashimite woman, early in the day,
a herd of wide-eyed antelopes swaying gracefully around her.
فَلَمso ... not أَرَI saw يَوماًa day كانَwas أَحسَنَmore beautiful مَنظَراًin appearance
وَنَحنُwhile we وُقوفٌstanding وَهيَwhile she تَنأىdraws away وَنَندُبُand we lament
I had never seen a day more beautiful to behold,
as we stood, while she drew away and we lamented.
فَلَوso if عَلِمَتshe had known فَوزٌFawz بِماof what كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
لَقَدsurely كانَwould have been مِنهاfrom her بَعضُsome of ماwhat كُنتُI was أَرهَبُfearing
Had Fawz known what had passed between us,
she would surely have done some of what I feared.
أَلاAh جَعَلmay make اللَهُGod الفِداthe ransom كُلَّevery حُرَّةٍfree woman
لِفَوزِfor Fawz المُنىof hopes إِنّيindeed I بِهاby her لَمُعَذَّبُtruly tormented
Ah, may God make every free woman a ransom
for Fawz, my heart's desire; I am truly tormented by her.
فَماfor there is no دونَهاshort of her فيamong الناسِpeople لِلقَلبِfor the heart مَطلَبٌobject of desire
وَلاand no خَلفَهاbeyond her فيamong الناسِpeople لِلقَلبِfor the heart مَذهَبُpath
For among people the heart has no goal short of her,
nor among people any path beyond her.
وَإِنand even if تَكُbe فَوزٌFawz باعَدَتناshe has distanced us وَأَعرَضَتand turned away
وَأَصبَحَand has become باقيthe remainder of حَبلِهاher cord يَتَقَضَّبُbreaks apart
Even if Fawz has kept us far away and turned aside,
and what remains of her cord is breaking apart,
وَحالَتand she turned away عَنِfrom العَهدِthe pledge الَّذيthat كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
وَصارَتand she became إِلىto غَيرِother than الَّذيwhat كُنتُI was أَحسَبُexpecting
and she has forsaken the pledge that was between us,
and become other than I had imagined,
وَهانَand mattered little عَلَيهاto her ماwhat أُلاقيI suffer فَرُبَّماyet perhaps
يَكونُthere will be التَلاقيreunion وَالقُلوبُand hearts تَقَلَّبُchange
and she cares little for what I suffer—yet perhaps
reunion will come, and hearts do change.
وَلَكِنَنيbut I وَالخالِقِby the Creator البارئِthe Maker الَّذيwho
يُزارُis visited لَهُfor Him البَيتُthe House العَتيقُthe ancient المُحَجَّبُthe veiled
Yet I—by the Creator, the Maker, for whom
the ancient, veiled House is visited—
I will surely hold fast بِالوُدِّto love ماas long as ذرَّrises شارِقٌa rising sun
وَماand as long as ناحَmourns قُمريٌa turtledove وَماand as long as لاحَshines كَوكَبُa star
will surely hold fast to love as long as the sun rises,
and as long as a turtledove mourns and a star shines.
وَأَبكيand I weep عَلىover فَوزٍFawz بِعَينٍwith an eye سَخينَةٍhot with tears
وَإِنand if زَهِدَتshe has no interest فيناin us نَقولُwe say سَتَرغَبُshe will feel desire
And I will weep for Fawz with an eye hot with tears;
and though she has no desire for us, we say, 'She will yet desire us.'
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat ليmine مِنfrom مَطلَعِthe rising place الشَمسِof the sun بُكرةًin the early morning
إِلىto حَيثُwhere تَهويit descends بالعَشِيِّin the evening فَتَغرُبُthen it sets
Even if I possessed, from where the sun rises at dawn
to where it descends at evening and sets,
أُحيطُI encompass بِهِit مُلكاًas a dominion لِماwould not كانَbe عِدلَهاher equal
لَعَمرُكِby your life إِنّيindeed I بِالفَتاةِby the maiden لَمُعجَبُtruly captivated
a realm wholly in my grasp, it would not equal her.
By your life, I am truly captivated by the maiden.
