I weep for those who let me taste their affection,

until, once they had awakened me to love, they fell asleep.

And they urged me to rise; but when I stood upright

under the weight of the love they had made me bear, they sat down.

    قَد كُنتُ أَحسَبُهُم يوَفونَ إِن عَهِدوا

    They wronged me and did not keep their pledge;

I had thought they would keep their word if they pledged.

I shall surely leave this world with my love for you

between my ribs, unknown to anyone.

I found a bond of acquaintance between myself and sorrow

that will never end unless eternity itself ends.

It is enough for me that you know you have been loved

by my heart, and that you hear the voice of what I feel.
