كَفىit is enough حَزَناًas sorrow أَنّيthat I أَرىI see مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
قَريباًnearby وَلاand do not أَشكوI complain إِلَيهِto him فيَعَلَمُso he might know
It is sorrow enough that I see the one I love
nearby, yet do not tell him my grief so he might know.
فَإِنfor if بُحتُI speak openly نالَتنيwould reach me عُيونٌeyes كَثيرَةٌmany
وَأَضعُفُand I am too weak عَنfor كِتمانِهِconcealing it حينَwhen أَكتُمُI conceal
For if I speak out, many eyes fall upon me,
and when I conceal it, I am too weak to keep it hidden.
وَأُقسِمُand I swear لَوif أَبصَرتَناyou saw us حينَwhen نَلتَقيwe meet
وَنَحنُwhile we are سُكوتٌsilent خِلتَناyou would think us نَتَكَلَّمُwe are speaking
And I swear, if you saw us when we meet,
silent though we are, you would think us speaking.
تَرىyou see أَعيُناًeyes تُبديreveal سَرائِرَsecrets أَنفُسٍsouls
مِراضٍailing وَدَمعاًand tears بِعدَafter ذَلِكَthat يُسجَمُare poured forth
You would see eyes revealing the secrets of souls
ailing, and tears poured forth thereafter.
