تَحسُدُenvies عَينيmy eye عَينَthe eye مَنwhoever يَرقُدُsleeps
وَمُسهِريand the one who keeps me awake أَوَّلُthe first مَنwhom أَحسُدُI envy
My eye envies the eye of whoever sleeps,
and the one who keeps me awake is the first I envy.
أَمسَتshe spent the evening تَذودُdriving away النَومَsleep عَنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye
ظُلماًunjustly وَقَدwhile already طابَhas grown pleasant لَهاto her المَرقَدُthe bed
She has spent the evening driving sleep from my eye,
unjustly, while her bed has grown sweet to her.
ياO لَيتَif only أَقواماًsome people عَلىfor حُبِّهاlove of her
يَلحونَنيthey reproach me إِنif رَقَدواthey slept يَسهَدواthey would lie awake
If only those who, for my love of her,
reproach me would lie sleepless when they lie down,
حَتّىso that يَذوقَmay taste القَومُthose people طَعمَthe flavor الهَوىof love
فَيَعذِرواand so may excuse فيin الحُبِّlove مَنthe one whom فَنَّدواthey called foolish
so that those people might taste the flavor of love,
and excuse, in love, the one they called foolish.
