قَدindeed سَحَّبَdragged الناسُthe people أَذيالَthe hems الظُنونِof suspicions بِناover us
وَفَرَّقَand divided الناسُthe people فيناabout us قَولَهمtheir talk فِرَقاinto parts
People have dragged the trailing hems of suspicion over us,
People have dragged the hems of suspicion over us.
And divided what they say of us into many versions.
And people have divided their talk about us into differing accounts.
فَجاهِلٌso an ignorant person قَدindeed رَمىcast بِالظَنِّwith suspicion غَيرَكُمُsomeone other than you
وَصادِقٌand a truthful person لَيسَdoes not يَدريknow أَنَّهُthat he صَدَقاspoke the truth
An ignorant man has cast suspicion on someone other than you,
An ignorant person has cast suspicion on someone other than you.
While one who spoke truly does not know that he spoke true.
And one who speaks the truth does not know he has spoken truly.
يَظُنُّsupposes هَذاthis one وَذاand that one ماwhat لَيسَdoes not يَعرِفُهُknow it
وَدَمعُand the tears عَينَيَّof my two eyes بِماof what أُخفيهِI conceal it قَدindeed نَطَقاhave spoken
This one and that suppose what they do not know,
This one and that suppose what they do not know.
And my eyes’ weeping has spoken of what I hide.
And the tears of my eyes have spoken of what I conceal.
