واكَبِديAlas for my liver! قَدindeed تَقَطَّعَتhas been torn apart كَبِديmy liver
مِنfrom كَمَدٍgrief عادَنيvisited me عَلىupon كَمَدِgrief
Alas for my liver! My liver has been torn apart
by grief that visited me on top of grief.
كُنتُI was مَريضاًill فَزادَنيand increased me مَرَضاًin illness
ماwhat جاءَنيreached me عَنكِabout you لَيلةَthe night of الأَحَدِSunday
I was ill, and my illness was worsened
by what reached me about you on Sunday night.
فَليتَنيso, if only I قَبلَbefore ماthat (nominalizer) سَمِعتُI heard بِهِof it
مُتُّI had died فَكُنتُand I would have been الرَهينَthe captive فيin اللَحَدِthe grave
If only, before I heard of it,
I had died and been a captive in the grave!
وَلَوand even if تَمَنّىwished عِدايَmy enemies وَاِجتَهدواand strove
ماnot بَلَغواthey attained ماwhat رَأَيتِyou saw فيin جَسَديmy body
Even if my enemies wished it and strove,
they could not have achieved what you saw in my body.
