أَأَبغيshall I seek صِباًyouthful passion مِنfrom بَعدِafter هيلانَةٍHaylana إِذاًthen
أُرانِيَI would deem myself مُلغاًexcluded مِنfrom وَفاءِloyalty to الحَبائِبِthe beloved women
Shall I seek youthful passion after Haylana? Then
I would deem myself devoid of loyalty to beloved women.
سَأوحِشُI shall leave desolate قَلبيmy heart بَعدَهاafter her مِنof سُرورِهِits joy
وَأونِسُand I shall comfort عَينيmy eye بِالدُموعِwith tears السَواكِبِstreaming
After her, I shall leave my heart desolate, bereft of its joy,
and give my eye the company of streaming tears.
إِذاwhen ذَرَفَتsheds tears عَينيmy eye لِحَرِّat the heat of مُصيبَةٍa calamity
تَمَثَّلتُI quote قَولَthe words of المُبتَلىone afflicted بِالمَصائِبِby calamities
When my eye sheds tears at a calamity's searing heat,
I quote the words of one afflicted by calamities:
أَجِدَّكَby your earnestness ماnot تَعفوheal كَلومُthe wounds of مُصيبَةٍa calamity
عَلىover صاحِبٍa friend إِلاexcept that فُجِعتُI am bereaved بِصاحِبِof a friend
“Truly, no sooner do the wounds of a calamity heal—
the loss of one friend—than I am bereaved of another.”
