أَيُّهاO العاتِبُthe reproacher الَّذيwho يَتَجَنّىfinds fault unjustly
كُلَّevery يَومٍday لِيَصرِمَto sever الحَبلَthe cord مِنّاfrom us
O reproacher, who finds fault without cause,
O reproacher who finds fault unjustly,
day after day, intent on severing the bond between us—
Every day, to sever the cord that binds us.
قَدalready عَرَفناwe have understood الَّذيwhat تُريدُyou intend بِهَذاby this
فَأتِso do ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish راشِداًrightly guided ماnot تَعنّىyou trouble yourself
we know what you seek by all this.
We have already understood what you intend by this.
So do as you wish, wisely; you need not trouble yourself.
So do as you wish, rightly guided, without troubling yourself.
إِنif تَكُنyou are لَمnot تُرِدyou desired وِصالَunion سِواهاanyone other than her
فَلِماذاthen why صَدَدتَyou turned away وَجهَكَyour face عَنّاfrom us
If you desired union with no one but her,
If you have desired union with none but her,
why, then, did you turn your face away from us?
Then why have you turned your face away from us?
قَدalready بَذَلناwe have offered لَكَto you المَوَدَّةَaffection وَالحُand love (first part)
بَّlove (completion) وَزِدناكَand we gave you more فَوقَbeyond ماwhat تَتَمنّىyou wish for
We freely gave you affection and lo—
We have offered you affection and lo-
—ve, and gave you more than you could ever wish for.
ve, and given you more than you wish for.
وَاِتَّبَعناand we followed رِضاكَyour approval فيin كُلِّevery وَجهٍway
لَوif only نُجازىwe were repaid بِمِثلِwith the like of ماwhat قَدalready فَعَلناwe have done
We followed your pleasure in every way—
And we have sought your approval in every way.
if only we were requited in kind for all we have done!
If only we were repaid in kind for what we have done!
فَإِلىthen for كَمhow long وَكَمand how long فُؤاديmy heart أُهديI offer
وَإِلىand for كَمhow long وَكَمand how long وَكَمand how long تَتَجَنَّىyou find fault unjustly
How much longer—how long—shall I offer up my heart?
Then for how long, and how long, shall I offer my heart?
And how much longer—how long, how long—will you find fault without cause?
And for how long, and how long, and how long will you find fault unjustly?
قَدalready أَمَتَّyou have killed الوِصالَunion مِنكَfrom you بِصَدٍّby turning away
لَوif أَعَدتَyou restored الوِصالَunion مِنكَfrom you لَعِشناwe would live
You have put our union to death by turning away;
You have already killed our union by turning away;
had you restored the union on your side, we would have lived.
If you restored your union with us, we would live.
