إِذاwhenever لُمتُI blame عَينَيَّmy two eyes اللَتَينِwhich (both) أَضَرَّتاboth have harmed
بِجِسمِيَto my body فيكُمon your account (plural) قالَتاthey both say ليto me لُمِblame القَلباthe heart
Whenever I blame my two eyes, which have harmed
my body on your account, they tell me, “Blame the heart.”
فَإِنand if لُمتُI blame قَلبيmy heart قالَit says عَيناكَyour two eyes هاجَتاboth have stirred up
عَلَيكَupon you الَّذيwhat تَلقىyou endure وَليyet on me تَجعَلُyou place الذَنباthe blame
And if I blame my heart, it says, “Your two eyes have brought
upon you what you endure, yet you lay the blame on me.”
وَقالَتand said لَهُto it العَينانِthe two eyes أَنتَyou عَشِقتَهاyou fell in love with her
فَقالَso it said نَعَمyes أَورَثتُمانيyou two imparted to me بِهاfor her عُجباadmiration
And the two eyes said to it, “You fell in love with her.”
It said, “Yes—you two filled me with admiration for her.”
فَقالَتthen said لَهُto it العَينانِthe two eyes فَاَكفُفthen desist عَنِfrom الَّتيthe woman who
مِنَout of البُخلِstinginess ماnot تَسقيكَshe gives you to drink مِنof ريقِهاher saliva عَذباsomething sweet
Then the two eyes said to it, “Then turn away from her who,
out of stinginess, gives you no sweet draught of her saliva.”
فَقالَthen said فُؤاديmy heart عَنكِof you لَوif تُرِكَhad been left alone القَطاthe sandgrouse
لَنامَit would have slept وَماand not باتَspent the night القَطاthe sandgrouse يَخرُقُcutting across السُهباthe wide plains
Then my heart said of you, “Had the sandgrouse been left alone,
it would have slept, and the sandgrouse would not have spent the night cutting across the wide plains.”
