My eyes have doomed my blood; ill fortune lies in looking.

Perdition to an eye that trades sleep for sleeplessness!

Oh, who will aid a thirsty man approaching water, whom they have barred

from reaching it and kept turned away?

I conceal my love, though it is hidden from no one.

Indeed, I hide where there is no hiding place.

    فَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ مَحمولٌ عَلى القَدَرِ

    So increase your blame or lessen it;

for all of that is laid upon fate.

Had my luck been good, it would not have been a target—

my heart—for one whose heart is harder than stone.

    وَإِن أَساءَ تَمادى غَيرَ مُعتَذِرِ

    If he does a kindness, he has not intended it;

and if he does wrong, he persists without apology.

And he is the most faithless of people in promises, and the slowest

to keep a promise, and the readiest to unravel a tightly twisted covenant.

When I write a letter, I find no one trustworthy

to deliver it to you and bring back news of you.

It would not harm your family never to look

at sun or moon, so long as you remain among them.

When I seek to forget, your champion is

my heart, and I cannot prevail against my heart.

Do you remember—may my soul ransom you—how we sat together

the day we met, when I was too tongue-tied to speak?

When I raise my eyes, I do not look around me,

out of care for you; all prudence lies in caution.

She said, “You sat but did not look.” I said to her:

“You occupied my heart, so I could not look.

Love for you veiled my heart and bewildered it,

and the heart wields greater power than sight.”

I laid my cheek down before the lowliest of those who gather around you,

until I was despised, though one like me deserves no contempt.

There is no shame in love; love is indeed a virtue,

yet it sometimes debases one of high standing.
