سَلامٌfarewell عَلىto الوَصلِthe bond الَّذيthat كانwas بَينَناbetween us
تَداعَتgave way بِهِwith it أَركانُهُits pillars فَتَضَعضَعاso it crumbled
Farewell to the bond that once united us;
its pillars gave way, and it crumbled.
تَمَنّىwished رِجالٌmen ماwhat أَحَبّواthey loved وَإِنَّماbut only
تَمَنَّيتُI wished أَنto أَشكوcomplain إِلَيهاto her فَتَسمَعاso she might listen
Men wished for what they loved, while all
I wished was to tell her my sorrow and have her listen.
وَماand not أَناI عَنwith قَلبيmy heart بِراضٍpleased فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it
أَشاطَshed دَميmy blood مِمّاbecause of what أَتىit did مُتَطَوِّعاof its own accord
And I am not pleased with my heart, for it
has spilled my blood through what it willingly did.
أَرىI see كُلَّevery مَعشوقَينِpair of lovers غَيريother than me وَغَيرَهاand other than her
قَدِindeed اِستَعذَباboth found sweet طَعمَthe taste الهَوىof love وَتَمَتَّعاand both took pleasure
I see that every pair of lovers, except her and me,
has found the taste of love sweet and enjoyed it.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِيّاهاand her عَلىin غَيرِthe absence of رِقبَةٍfear
وَتَفريقِand sundering شَملٍof a union لَمnot نَبِتwe spent the night لَيلَةًa night مَعاtogether
And she and I have never, free from fear
and separation, spent a single night together.
وَقَدand indeed عَصَفَتblew fiercely ريحُthe wind الوُشاةِof the talebearers بِوَصلِناagainst our bond
وَجَرَّتand dragged عَلَيهِover it ذَيلَهاits hem فَتَقَطَّعاso it was torn apart
And the wind of talebearers has battered our bond,
and dragged its hem across it, until it was torn apart.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَنهىI do restrain النَفسَthe soul عَنهاfrom her وَلَمthough not تَكُنit was
بِشَيءٍwith anything مِنَof الدُنياthis world سِواهاother than her لِتَقنَعاever to be content
And I do hold my soul back from her, though it would never
be content with anything in this world but her.
