لَقَدindeed جِئتُI came الطَبيبَthe physician لِسُقمِfor the sickness of نَفسيmy soul
لِيَشفيهاso he might heal her الطَبيبُthe physician فَماbut did not شَفاهاhe healed her
Indeed, I came to the physician for my soul’s sickness,
so the physician might heal her, but he did not heal her.
فَأُقسِمُso I swear جاهِداًearnestly لَوَدِدتُI indeed wish أَنّيthat I
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle المَوتُdeath مُعتَمِداًdeliberately أَتاهاit came to her
So I swear in earnest: I truly wish that,
when death came expressly for her,
بَداit began بيwith me قَبلَهاbefore her فَلَقيتُso I met حَتفيmy death
وَلَمand did not أَسمَعI hear مَقالَةَthe words of مَنwhoever نَعاهاannounced her death
it would begin with me before her, so I would meet my death,
and not hear the words of whoever announced her death.
