أَياO أَهلَpeople of فَوزٍFawz أَلاwill ... not? تَسمَعونَyou listen
أَلاwill ... not? تَنظُرونَyou look إِلىat ماwhat لَقيناwe have endured
O people of Fawz, will you not listen?
Will you not look at what we have endured?
أَلاwill ... not? تَعجَبونَyou marvel لِفَوزِat Fawz المُنيcherished wishes
تَميلُshe inclines وَتُصغيand she listens closely إِلىto الكاشِحيناthe spiteful
Will you not marvel at Fawz, my heart's desire,
As she turns and lends an ear to the spiteful?
وَلَوand if شِئتُI wished مِلتُI would have turned إِلىto غَيرِهاsomeone other than her
إِلىto مَنone who يَكونُwould be بِوُدّيof my love ضَنيناjealously protective
And had I wished, I could have turned to another,
To one who would jealously cherish my love.
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I كُنتُI had عاهَدتُهاI pledged to her
عَلىto أَنthat أَدومَI remain constant وأَنand that لاnot أَخوناI betray
But I had pledged to her
To remain constant and never betray her.
فَقَدfor indeed عَجِبَmarveled الناسُthe people مِنat أَمرِناour affair
وَأَنساهُمُand it made them forget قِصَصَthe tales of الأَوَّليناthose of old
For people have indeed marveled at our affair,
And it has made them forget the tales of those of old.
وَصِرناand we have become حَديثاًa tale لِمَنfor those who بَعدَناafter us
تُحَدِّثُwill tell عَنّاabout us القُرونُthe generations القُروناthe generations
And we have become a tale for those who come after us;
Generations will tell generations about us.
