كَتَبَwrote المُحِبُّthe lover إِلىto الحَبيبِthe beloved رِسالَةًa letter
وَالعَينُand the eye مِنهُof him ماnot تَجِفُّdries مِنَfrom البُكاweeping
The lover wrote a letter to the beloved,
And his eye is never dry of tears.
وَالجِسمُand the body مِنهُof him قَدindeed أَضَرَّcaused harm بِهِto it البِلىwasting
وَالقَلبُand the heart مِنهُof him ماnot يُطاوِعُobeys مَنwhoever نَهىforbade
And his body has been ravaged by wasting.
And his heart obeys no one who tells him to desist.
قَدindeed صارَbecame مِثلَlike الخَيطِthe thread مِنfrom ذِكراكُمُremembering you
وَالسَمعُand the hearing مِنهُof him لَيسَdoes not يَسمَعُhear مَنwhoever دَعاcalled
He has grown thin as a thread from remembering you,
And his hearing catches no one's call.
هَذاthis كِتابٌa letter نَحوَكُمtoward you أَرسَلتُهُI sent it
يَبكيweeps السَميعُthe listener لَهُover it وَيَبكيand weeps مَنwhoever قَراreads
This is a letter I have sent to you;
Whoever hears it weeps, and whoever reads it weeps.
فيهِin it العَجائِبُthe marvels مِنfrom مُحِبٍّa lover صادِقٍsincere
أَطفاهُextinguished him حُبُّكِlove for you ياO حَبيبَةُbeloved فَاِنطَفاso he was extinguished
It holds marvels from a sincere lover:
Love for you extinguished him, O beloved, and he faded away.
وَصَبَرتُand I endured حَتّىuntil عيلَwas exhausted صَبريmy patience كُلُّهُall of it
وَهَوَيتُكُمand I loved you ياO حِبَّbeloved of نَفسيmy soul لِلشَّقاto misery
And I endured until all my patience was spent.
And I loved you, O my soul's beloved, to my misery.
وَكَتَمتُand I concealed حُبَّكِlove for you فَاِعلَميso know وَاِستَيقِنيand be certain
وَالحُبُّand love مِنfrom غَيريanyone but me فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom قَدindeed أَبىhas refused
And I concealed my love for you—know this and be certain.
While love in others—may I be your ransom—has refused concealment.
أَفَماthen is there no لِهَذاfor this حُرمَةٌsanctity مَحفوظَةٌpreserved
أَوَماand is there no لِهَذاfor this ياO فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom مِنany جَزاreward
Has this, then, no sanctity to be upheld?
And is there no reward for this—oh, may I be your ransom?
ماnot إِنemphatic particle صَباfell in love مِثليlike me جَميلٌJamil فَاِعلَميso know

حَقاًtruly وَلاnor المَقتولُthe slain عُروَةُUrwa إِذwhen صَباfell in love
Jamil never loved as I have—know this
For certain—nor did the slain Urwa when he loved.
لاno لاno وَلاnor مِثليlike me المُرَقِّشُal-Muraqqish إِذwhen هَويloved
أَسماءَAsma لِلحَينِto death المُحَتَّمِinevitable وَالقَضاand fate
No, no—nor did al-Muraqqish love as I have when he loved
Asma, to his inevitable death and doom.
هاتيgive me يَدَيكِyour two hands فَصالِحينيthen make peace with me مَرَّةًonce

Give me your hands, then make peace with me for once,
So we may curse whoever began the estrangement, O my soul.
