Lo, she wrote, issuing prohibitions and commanding separation.

So I told her, “Would that your heart were in my breast!

I shall keep away to please you, and perish of grief.

And it is enough for me that you are pleased, though my parting kills me.”

And a woman secluded in her chamber from every gaze—

were she to appear at night, no night traveler would stray.

The beauty of a mole on her cheek tears my heart apart

when she unveils it, and it breathes enchantment.

Indeed, a mole on that cheek is lovelier in our eyes

than the black spot in the full moon’s radiance.

May it gladden you that you have eased your hearts

and that you have hurled ardent longing into my breast.
