نَظَرُgazing العُيونِof the eyes إِلىat ظَلومَẒalūm نَعيمُbliss
إِنَّindeed السُرورَjoy يُقيمُdwells حَيثُwhere تُقيمُshe dwells
For eyes to gaze upon Ẓalm is bliss.
Gazing upon Ẓalūm is bliss for the eyes.
Indeed, joy abides wherever you abide.
Indeed, joy dwells where she dwells.
وَأَرىand I see النِساءَthe women يَلُمنَنيthey reproach me فيabout أَمرِهاher affair
أَبغِضhow hateful إِليَّto me بِمَنis anyone who أَراهُI see him يَلومُreproaches
I see the women blame me on her account;
And I see the women reproaching me over her.
how hateful to me is anyone I see casting blame!
How hateful to me is anyone I see reproaching me!
ماnot قَوَّمَتكِappraised you مُلوكُkings أَرضٍof a land قيمَةًa value
إِلّاexcept that اِرتَفَعتِyou rose higher وَقَصَّرَand fell short التَقويمُthe appraisal
Never have the kings of any land set a value upon you
No kings of any land have ever set a value on you
but you rose beyond it, while appraisal falls short.
Without your rising above it and the appraisal falling short.
وَجَهٌa face يَكِلُّfalters الطَرفُthe gaze عَنهُfrom it إِذاwhen بَداit appears
هُوَit بِالعَفافِwith chastity وَبِالتُقىand with piety مَوسومُmarked
A face that wounds the gaze when it appears—
A face before which the gaze falters when it appears—
it is marked by chastity and piety.
It is marked with chastity and piety.
يَحسُدنَthey envy وَجهَكِyour face ياO ظَلومُẒalūm جَمالَهُits beauty
هَيهاتَfar from it ماnot لَكِfor you فيin الجَمالِbeauty قَسيمُan equal
The women envy your face its beauty, O Ẓalm;
They envy your face its beauty, O Ẓalūm.
far from it—you have no peer in beauty.
Far from it! You have no equal in beauty.
وَغَبَطتُand I envied نَفسيmyself إِذwhen رَأَيتُكِI saw you مَرَّةًonce
مَنwhoever لاdoes not يَراكِsees you فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he مَحرومُdeprived
And I counted myself blessed when once I saw you:
And I envied myself when I saw you once;
whoever does not see you is truly deprived.
Whoever does not see you is indeed deprived.
