قَلبيmy heart يُفَدّيoffers itself as ransom for قَلبَكِyour heart القاسيcruel
O Fawz, O Abbas’s heart’s desire!
My heart offers itself as ransom for your cruel heart.
أَسأتُI erred إِذwhen أَحسَنتُI made favorable ظَنّيmy opinion بِكُمof you
وَالحَزمُand prudence سوءُill الظَنِّopinion بِالناسِof people
I erred when I thought well of you.
And prudence is to think ill of people.
يُقلِقُنيunsettles me الشَوقُlonging فَآتيكُمُso I come to you
وَالقَلبُand the heart مَملوءٌfilled مِنَwith الياسِdespair
Longing unsettles me, so I come to you.
And my heart is filled with despair.
أَعطَيتُI granted قَلبيmy heart فيكُمُconcerning you سُؤلَهُits wish
فَعادَso it rebounded إِعطائيmy giving عَلىupon راسيmy head
I granted my heart its wish for you.
So my giving rebounded upon my own head.
