أَلاAh أَسعِدينيweep with me بِالدُّموعِwith tears السَواكِبِstreaming
عَلىover الوَجدِanguish مِنfrom صَرمِthe desertion of الحَبيبِthe beloved المُغاضِبِangry
Ah, weep with me in streaming tears
for the anguish of the angry beloved's desertion.
فَسُحّيthen pour forth دُموعاًtears هامِلاتٍflowing كَأَنَّهاas though they
لَهاthey have آمِرٌa commander بِالفَيضِto overflow مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath حاجِبِan eyebrow
Then pour forth flowing tears, as though
they had a commander bidding them flood from beneath an eyebrow.
أَلاAh وَاستَزيديهاand ask her for more هَوىًlove وَتلَطُّفاًand tenderness
وَقوليand say لَهاto her فيin السِرِّsecret ياO أُمَّmother of طالِبِTalib
Ah, and ask her for more love and tenderness,
and tell her in secret, O Umm Talib:
لِماذاwhy أَرَدتِyou wished الصِرمَestrangement مِنّيfrom me وَلَمand not أَكُنI was
لِعَهدِكُمُaccording to your knowledge بِيَof me بالمَذوقِinsincere المُوارِبِdeceitful
Why did you wish to break with me, when I have not been,
as you have known me, insincere or deceitful?
وَإِنand if كانَwas هَذاthis الصِرمُestrangement مِنكِfrom you تَدَلُلاًcoyness
فأَهلاًthen welcome وَسَهلاًand welcome بِالدَلالِto coyness المُخالِبِbeguiling
And if this estrangement from you is coyness,
then welcome, welcome to such beguiling coyness!
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou were قَدalready بُلِّغتِyou were told ياO فَوزُFawz باطِلاًa falsehood
تُقوِّلَwas fabricated عَنّيabout me فَاِسمَعيthen listen ثُمَthen عاتِبيreproach
And if you have been told, O Fawz, a falsehood
fabricated about me, then listen, and afterward reproach me.
وَلاand do not تَعجَليhurry بِالصِرمِto sever ties حَتّىuntil تَبَيَّنيyou ascertain
أَقَولَwhether the word of مُحِقٍّa truthful person كانَit was أَمor قَولِthe word of كاذِبِa liar
And do not hasten to break with me until you ascertain
whether it was a truthful person's word or a liar's.
كَأَنَّas though جَميعَall of الأَرضَthe earth حَتّىuntil أَراكُمُI see you
تَصَوَّرُtakes shape فيin عَينيmy eye سودَblack العَقارِبِthe scorpions
It is as though all the earth, until I see you,
takes the form of black scorpions in my eyes.
وَلَوand even if زُرتُكُمI visited you فيin اليَومِthe day سَبعينَseventy مَرَّةًtimes
لَكُنتُI would be كَذيlike one with فَرخٍa chick عَنِfrom الفَرخِthe chick غَائِبِabsent
And even if I visited you seventy times a day,
I would be like a parent bird away from its chick.
أَرانيI see myself أَبيتُI pass the night اللَيلَthe night صاحِبَa bearer of عَبرَةٍa tear
مَشوقاًfilled with longing أُراعيI watch مُنجِداتِrising الكَواكِبِthe stars
I find myself passing the night in tears,
filled with longing, watching the rising stars.
أُراقِبُI watch طولَthroughout اللَيلِthe night حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِنقَضىit ends
رَقَبتُI watched طُلوعَthe rising of الشَمسِthe sun حَتّىuntil المَغارِبِsunsets
I keep watch all night; then, when it ends,
I watch the sun from its rising until sunset.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle مَضىpass هَذانِthese two عَنّيaway from me بِلَذَّتيwith my pleasure
فَماthen not أَناI فيin الدُنياthis world لِعَيشٍof life بِصاحِبِa possessor
When these two pass, taking my pleasure from me,
then I have no share in life in this world.
فَياso, O شُؤمَill fortune جَدّيmy luck كَيفَhow أَبكيI weep تَلَهُّفاًin regret
عَلىover ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنof وَصلِunion with بَيضاءَa fair-skinned woman كاعِبِbudding-breasted
Ah, my wretched luck! How I weep in regret
for past union with a fair-skinned, budding-breasted maiden.
رَأَتshe saw رَغبَةًdesire مِنّيfrom me فَأَبدَتso she showed زَهادَةًindifference
أَلاAh رُبَّmany a مَحرومٍone deprived مِنَamong الناسِpeople راغِبِlonging
She saw desire in me and showed indifference.
Ah, many a person yearns, yet is denied.
أُريدُI intend لِأَدعوto call غَيرَهاsomeone other than her فَيَجُرَّنيbut it drags me
لِسانيmy tongue إِلَيهاtoward her بِاِسمِهاby her name كَالمُغالِبِlike one overpowering me
I mean to call someone other than her, but am dragged
by my tongue toward her, through her name, as though it overpowered me.
يَظَلُّkeeps on لِسانيmy tongue يَشتَكيcomplains of الشَوقَlonging وَالهَوىand love
وَقَلبيand my heart كَذيlike one in حَبسٍimprisonment لِقَتلٍfor execution مُراقِبِawaiting
My tongue keeps lamenting longing and love,
and my heart is like a prisoner awaiting execution.
كَأَنَّas though بِقَلبيin my heart كُلَمّاwhenever هاجَsurges شَوقُهُits longing
حَراراتِheat أَقباسٍfirebrands تَلوحُgleam لِراهِبِto a monk
It is as though my heart, whenever its longing flares,
held the heat of firebrands gleaming before a monk.
وَلَوand if كانَwas قَلبيmy heart يَستَطيعُcould manage تَكَلُّماًspeech
لَحَدَّثَكُمit would tell you عَنّيabout me بِكُلِّof all العَجائِبِthe wonders
And if my heart could speak,
it would tell you all the wonders about me.
كَتَبتُI wrote فَأَكثَرتُthen I increased الكِتابَthe correspondence إِلَيكُمُto you
عَلىwith رَغبَةٍlonging حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed مَلَّgrew weary كاتِبيmy scribe
I wrote, and kept writing letters to you,
in longing, until even my scribe grew weary.
أَماdo you not تَتَّقينyou fear اللَهُGod فيin قَتلِkilling عاشِقٍa lover
صَريعٍlaid low نَحيلِemaciated الجِسمِin body كالخَيطِlike a thread ذائِبِmelting away
Do you not fear God in killing a lover,
laid low, his body thin as a thread, melting away?
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif آبصَرتِنيyou saw me مُتَضَرِّعاًhumbly pleading
أُقَلِّبُI turn طَرفيmy gaze ناظِراًlooking كُلَّevery جانِبِside
So I swear, if you saw me humbly pleading,
turning my gaze, looking to every side,
وَحَوليand around me مِنَamong العوّادِthe sickbed visitors باكٍone weeping وَمُشفِقٍand one anxious
أُباعِدُI keep away أَهليmy family كُلَّهُمall of them وَأَقارِبيand my relatives
with visitors around me, some weeping and some anxious,
keeping all my family and relatives away,
لَأَبكاكِit would make you weep مِنّيof me ماwhat تَرينَyou see تَوَجُّعاًin anguish
كَأَنَّكِas though you بيwith me ياO فَوزُFawz قَدalready قامَhas risen نادِبيmy mourner
what you saw of me would make you weep in anguish.
It is as though you saw me, O Fawz, with my mourner already risen.
لَقَدindeed قالَsaid داعيthe caller of الحُبِّlove هَلis there مِنany مُجاوِبٍone who answers
فَأَقبَلتُso I came forward أَسعىhurrying قَبلَbefore كُلِّevery مُجاوِبِone who answers
Indeed, love's herald said, 'Is there anyone to answer?'
So I came hurrying, ahead of all who answered.
فَماso not إِنemphatic particle لَهُfor it إِلاexcept إِلَيَّtoward me مَذاهِبٌpaths
تَكونُexist وَلاand not إِلاexcept إِلَيهِtoward it مَذاهِبيmy paths
So it has no paths except those toward me,
and my paths lead nowhere but toward it.
