بَعَثَتshe sent إِلَيَّto me صَحيفَةًa letter مَختومَةًsealed
نَفسيmy soul الفِداءُthe ransom لِخَطِّهاfor her handwriting وَالكاتِبِand the writer
She sent me a sealed letter.
May my soul be a ransom for her handwriting and its writer.
فَفَكَكتُهاso I unsealed it فَقَرَأتُthen I read ماwhat قَدhad حَبَّرَتshe penned
فَإِذاand behold مَقالَةُthe words مُستَزيرٍone requesting a visit عاتِبِreproachful
So I unsealed it and read what she had penned.
And behold: the words of one seeking a visit, full of reproach.
فيin الوُدِّlove تَزعُمُshe claims أَنَّنيthat I ذوpossessing مَلَّةٍweariness
خُنتُI betrayed العُهودَthe vows فَدَيتُهاmay I be her ransom مِنwhat a (exclamatory) كاذِبِliar
She claims that, in love, I am prone to weariness,
That I have betrayed the vows—may I be her ransom, liar that she is!
أَنّىhow أَخونُكِI betray you ياO ظَلومُcruel one وَحُبُكُمand love for you
مِنّيwithin me بِحَيثُat the place where جَرىflowed شَرابُa draught الشارِبِof the drinker
How could I betray you, O cruel one, when love for you
Lies within me where the drinker's draught flows?
