إِلىto اللَهُGod أَشكوI complain أَنَّthat فَوزاًFawz تَغَيَّرَتhas changed
وَحالَتand she turned away عَنَfrom العَهدِthe pledge القَديمِold فَأَنهَجاso it grew threadbare
To God I complain that Fawz has changed,
and turned away from the old pledge, so it grew threadbare.
وَلَمّاand when رَأَتshe saw حِرصيmy eagerness عَلَيهاfor her تَحَرَّجَتshe held back out of scruple
وَحُقَّand it is fitting عَلىfor المَعشوقِthe beloved أَنto يَتَحَرَّجاhold back out of scruple
And when she saw my eagerness for her, she held back out of scruple;
and it is fitting for the beloved to hold back out of scruple.
وَقَدand indeed حَسِبَتshe considered ذَنباًa sin عَلَيَّagainst me تَزَوُّجيmy marrying
فَقُلتُso I said كِلاناboth of us مُذنِبٌguilty قَدindeed تَزَوَّجاhave married
And she has deemed my marriage a sin on my part;
so I said: We are both guilty; both have married.
كِلاناboth of us عَلىregarding ماwhat كانَhappened مِنof ذاكَthat مُكرَهٌcompelled
يُحاوِلُhe grapples with أَمراًa matter لَمnot يَجِدhe found مِنهُfrom it مَخرَجاa way out
Each of us was forced into what came to pass,
struggling with a matter from which he found no escape.
كِلاناboth of us مَشوقٌfilled with longing أَنضَجَhas seared الشَوقُlonging قَلبَهُhis heart
يُعالِجُhe struggles with جَمراًembers فيin الحَشاthe inner breast مُتَأَجِّجاblazing
Each of us is filled with longing; longing has seared his heart,
and he struggles with embers blazing in his breast.
