Glory to Him who made love

a king over the hearts of humankind.

What is this I endure each morning,

    and each evening—this struggle?

Woe to me for a treacherous woman

who settled among us in al-Sawad.

She was raised above us, after

planting her love in the heart.

For the heart is love’s planting-ground,

and its crop is the thorns of the qatad bush.
