أَظاعِنونَare you departing فَنَبكيso we weep أَمor مُقيموناstaying
إِنّاindeed we لَفيsurely in غَفلَةٍunawareness عَمّاof what تُريدوناyou intend
Are you departing, so that we must weep, or are you staying?
Whether you make me dwell or make me weep
We are indeed unaware of what you intend.
We are in oblivion of what you intend for us
أَنكَرتُI found unfamiliar مَنof وُدَّكُمyour affection ماwhat كُنتُI used to أَعرِفُهُknow it
ماnot أَنتُمُyou ليto me كَماas كُنتُمyou were تَكونوناyou are
In your affection I no longer recognize what I once knew;
I denied the affection you had for me that I did not know
You are no longer to me as you once were.
You are not to me as you used to be
لاneither سَيءٌّa bad deed عِندَكُمwith you يُغنيavails وَلاnor حَسَنٌa good deed
فَالمُحسِنونَso the doers of good سَواءٌare alike وَالمُسيئوناand the wrongdoers
Neither a bad deed nor a good one avails with you;
No evil with you is profitable, and no good either
So those who do good and those who do wrong are alike.
So benefactors and malefactors are equal to you
هَلdo تُنكِرونyou deny وُقوفيmy standing عِندَby دارِكُمُyour house
نِصفَthe middle of النَهارِthe day وَأَهلُwhile the people of الدارِthe house هادوناare at rest
Do you deny my standing by your house
Do you deny my standing at your abode
At midday, while the household is at rest?
Half the day, while the people of the house are sleeping?
نَشكوwe complain of الظَماءَthirst وَماbut not نَشكوهwe complain of it عَنfrom عَطَشٍthirst
لَكِنbut لِغُلَّةِbecause of the burning thirst of قَلبٍa heart باتَspent the night مَحزوناsorrowful
We complain of thirst, though our complaint does not spring from thirst,
We complain of thirst, but not from lack of water
But from the burning thirst of a heart that spent the night grieving.
Rather from the heaviness of a heart that passed the night sad
إِنif كانَit is يَنفَعُكُمbenefits you ماwhat تَصنَعونَyou do بِناto us
وَسَرَّكُمand delights you طولُthe length of ماwhat نَلقىwe endure فَزيدوناthen give us more
If what you do to us benefits you,
If our suffering benefits you, and your tormenting us delights you
And the length of our suffering delights you, then give us more.
Then give us more, increase it for us
ياO فَوزُFawz ماnot مَلَّنيgrew weary of me حَقّاًtruly رَسولُكُمyour messenger
حَتّىuntil مَلِلتُمyou grew weary وَماthough not كُنتُمyou had been تَمَلّوناyou grow weary
O Fawz, your messenger truly did not grow weary of me
O my joy, your messenger did not really weary me
Until you wearied of me, though you had not done so before.
Until you wearied, though you did not use to weary us
وَلاnor اِستَخَفَّhe made light بِأَمرٍof a matter ليof mine أُعَظِّمُهُI deem it important
حَتّىuntil رَآكُمhe saw you بِأَمريof my concern تَستَخِفّوناyou make light
Nor did he make light of a matter of mine that I held important
Nor did I take lightly any matter of mine that I esteemed
Until he saw you making light of my concern.
Until I saw you taking my matter lightly
لَوif كُنتُI were أَشكوI complain إِلىto قَومٍa people قَتَلتُI had killed لَهُمof theirs
نَفساًa life لَظَلّواthey would keep لِماbecause of what أَشكوهُI complain of it يَبكوناthey weep
Were I to complain to people from whom I had taken
If I complained to a people for whom I killed a soul
A life, they would go on weeping over what I complain of.
They would weep for what I complain of
وَأَنتُمُand you أَهلَthe recipients of وُدّيmy love قَدindeed شُغِفَتُI am smitten بَكُمwith you
تَبلىwaste away عِظاميmy bones وَأَنتُمwhile you لاnot تُبالوناyou care
Yet you, my loved ones, with whom I am deeply smitten—
Yet you are the people of my love, I am impassioned with you
My bones waste away while you do not care.
While my bones waste away and you do not care
كَأَنَّنيas though I وَالهَوىwhile love فيacross الأَرضِthe earth يَطرُدُنيdrives me
مِنone of قَومِthe people of موسىMoses الأُلىwho كانواthey were يَتيهوناthey wander lost
It is as though I, with love driving me across the earth,
It is as though, in the land, desire expels me
Were one of Moses's people, who wandered lost.
From the folk of Moses, those who wandered
وَماand never مَرَرتُI passed بِقَومٍby some people فيin مَجالِسِهمtheir gatherings
إِلاّexcept that سَمِعتُهُمُI heard them فيناabout us يَخوضوناthey talk at length
Never have I passed people in their gatherings
I have not passed by a people in their gatherings
Without hearing them talking about us.
Except I heard them wading into us
وَقَدand indeed أَمِنّاwe trusted عَلىwith أَسرارِناour secrets نَفَراًa group of men
كانواthey were كَأَولادِlike the sons of يَعقوبٍJacob يَخونوناthey betray
And we entrusted our secrets to a group of men
And we entrusted our secrets to some
Who betrayed us like the sons of Jacob.
Who were like the sons of Jacob, betraying us
وَيحَalas for المُحِبّينَlovers ماhow أَشقىwretched are جُدودَهُمُtheir fortunes
إِنif كانَis مِثلُthe like of الَّذيwhat بيafflicts me بِالمُحِبّيناin lovers
Alas for lovers—how wretched their fortunes,
Woe to the lovers! How miserable were their ancestors
If lovers endure the like of what afflicts me!
If those who love like me are among the lovers
يَشقونَthey suffer فيin هَذِهِthis الدُنياworld بِعِشقِهِمُbecause of their passion
لاnot يُدرِكونَthey attain بِهِthrough it دُنياworldly good وَلاnor ديناreligious good
They suffer in this world because of their passion;
They suffer in this world for their love
Through it they attain neither worldly nor religious good.
They attain through it neither worldly gain nor religion
يَرِقُّis tender قَلبيmy heart لِأَهلِtoward the people of العِشقِpassionate love أَنَّهُمُbecause they
إِذاwhen رَأَونيthey see me وَماand what أَلقىI endure يَرِقّوناthey feel compassion
My heart is tender toward lovers, for they,
My heart is tender toward the people of passion?that
When they see me and what I endure, are moved to pity.
When they see me and what I face, they are tender
أَبكيI weep وَمِثليand one like me بَكىwept مِنfor حُبِّlove of جارِيَةٍa maiden
لَمdid not يَجعَلِput اللَهُGod ليfor me فيin قَلبِهاher heart ليناtenderness
I weep, and others like me have wept, for love of a maiden
I weep, and one like me wept for love of a maiden
In whose heart God has placed no tenderness for me.
To whom God put no softness for him in her heart
ياO فوزُFawz كَمhow many مِنof ذَويthose bearing ضِغنٍrancor رَأَيتُهُمُI have seen them
يَنهَونَthey forbid عَنكِaway from you وَلَكِنand yet لاnot يُطاعوناthey are obeyed
O Fawz, how many spiteful men I have seen
O my joy, how many spiteful ones have I seen
Bidding me keep away from you, yet they are not obeyed.
Who deter you from me but are not obeyed
وَلاand not نُباليهِمُwe heed them إِذsince قَدindeed وَثِقتِyou have trusted بِناin us
أَيُكثِرونَdo they speak much كَلاماًspeech أَمor يُقِلّوناthey say little
And we pay them no heed, since you have trusted us,
We do not care for them, since we trust in you
Whether they speak much or little.
Whether they speak much or speak little
