وَلَكِنbut قَلَّgrew scarce فيamong الناسِpeople الوَفاءُfaithfulness
And they did not forsake you for any offense against them.
They did not abandon you for any sin of theirs,
But faithfulness has grown scarce among people.
But loyalty has become rare among people.
وَغَيَّرَand changed عَهدَهُمtheir pledge مَرُّthe passing of اللَياليthe nights
وَحانَand the time came لِمُدَّةِfor the duration of الوَصلِunion انقِضاءُan end
And the passing of nights changed their pledge.
The passing nights have changed their pledge,
And the time came for the season of union to end.
And the time for attachment has come to an end.
سَرابيلُrobes المُلوكِkings لَهاthey have جَمالٌbeauty
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهاfor them إِذاwhen لُبِسَتthey are worn بَقاءُendurance
The robes of kings are beautiful.
The robes of kings are beautiful,
And when worn, they do not endure.
But they have no permanence when worn.
وَإِنَّand indeed العَطفَaffection بَعدَafter العَتبِreproach يُرجىis hoped for
وَإِنَّand indeed المَلَّةَweariness الداءُthe malady العَياءُincurable
And affection can indeed be hoped for after reproach.
Hopefully gentleness comes after harshness,
And weariness is indeed the incurable malady.
But persistence is the bane of the despondent.

I saw despair clothe me in humility.
I have seen despair clothe me in humility,
And I hope for her, yet hope eludes me.
And I hope in it, yet hope eludes me.
