لَهُhe has خُلقانِtwo dispositions ماnot يَتَشابَهانِthey resemble each other
And one content at heart, yet angry of tongue—
With a content heart but angry tongue
He has two dispositions that are not alike.
He has two natures that do not match
يُسِرُّhe conceals مَوَدَّتيlove for me وَيُطيلُand prolongs غَيظيmy anger
وَيَمزُجُand mingles ليfor me الكَرامَةَhonor بِالهَوانِwith humiliation
He conceals his love for me and prolongs my anger,
He pleases my affection but prolongs my rage
And mingles honor with humiliation for me.
And mixes honor with disgrace for me
هَبيgrant دَمعيmy tears لِعَينيto my eye إِنَّindeed دَمعيmy tears
مُطيعُكِobedient to you ياO ظَلومُcruel one وَقَدand indeed عَصانيhas disobeyed me
Grant my tears to my eye, for my tears
Grant my tears to my eyes though my tears
Obey you, O cruel one, though they have disobeyed me.
Obey you, oh unjust one, and have rebelled against me
فَكَيفَhow then تَجِفُّgrow dry عَيناthe two eyes of مُستَهامٍone consumed by love
بِطولِwith the length of بُكاهُماtheir weeping تَتَبادَرانِthey vie with each other
How, then, can a lovesick lover's two eyes grow dry,
So how can the eyes of one despairing dry up
As they vie with each other in their prolonged weeping?
When ceaseless crying makes them overflow
