وَجاهِلٍand an ignorant man لَمdid not يَذُقِtaste الحُبّاlove
لَحىrebuked مُحِبّاًa lover دَنِفاًailing صَبّاlovestruck
And an ignorant man who had not tasted love
An ignorant man who has never tasted love
rebuked a lover, ailing and lovestruck.
Mocks a passionate, devoted lover
لَوif ذاقَhe tasted لَوعاتِthe agonies of الهَوىpassion لَمwould not يَكُنbe
هَوىlove for ظَلومٍZalum عِندَهُin his eyes ذَنباa sin
Had he tasted the agonies of passion, it would not have been
If he felt the torments of passion he wouldn't
a sin in his eyes to love Zalum.
Consider the love of the oppressed a sin
رَمَتshe shot ظَلومٌZalum بِسِهامٍwith arrows لَهاof hers
قَلبيmy heart فَقَدand indeed أَقصَدَتِshe struck fatally القَلباthe heart
Zalum shot arrows of her own
The oppressed aimed arrows at my heart
at my heart, and dealt the heart a mortal blow.
And surely hit their mark
لَوif عُبِدَwere worshipped المَخلوقُa created being مِنfor

حُسنِهِits beauty لَأَصبَحَتshe would surely become مالِكَتيmy mistress رَبّاa god
If a created being were worshipped for
If the created were worshipped for their beauty
its beauty, my mistress would surely become a god.
My mistress would be worshipped like an idol
