ظَلَمَتwronged عَينُكِyour eye عَينيmy eye إِنَّهاindeed, it
بادَلَتهاgave it in exchange بِالرُقادِfor sleep الأَرَقاsleeplessness
Your eye has wronged mine, for it
Your eyes have darkened my eyes, for they
has given mine sleeplessness in exchange for sleep.
Have exchanged them for sleepless nights
سُلِّطَwas given dominion الشَوقُlonging عَلىover الدَمعِtears فَماand never
هَبَّstirred داعيthe herald of الشَوقِlonging إِلّاexcept that اِندَفَقاgushed forth
Longing was given dominion over tears, and never
Yearning has been unleashed on tears, so they
did longing's herald stir without their gushing forth.
Flowed freely when yearning's urge inclined
كُنتُI was لاnot أَمنَعُI deny قَلبيmy heart سُؤلَهُits wish
وَلَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was عَلَيهِtoward it شَفِقاcompassionate
I would not deny my heart its wish,
I did not restrain my heart from its plea
And indeed I was tender toward it.
And I had been gentle with it indeed
فَتَمادىso it pressed onward القَلبُthe heart فيin بَحرِthe sea of الهَوىlove
يَركَبُit rides into التَغريرَperil حَتّىuntil غَرِقاit drowned
So the heart ventured ever farther into the sea of love,
So the heart persisted in the sea of love
Riding into peril until it drowned.
Riding delusions until it sank
أَيُّهاO you النادِبُthe mourner قَوماًa people هَلَكواthey perished
صارَتِbecame الأَرضُthe earth عَلَيهِمover them طَبَقاa lid
O you who mourn a people who perished,
O you who mourns a people gone by
Over whom the earth has become a lid,
The earth has become their grave and coffin
أُندُبِmourn العُشّاقَthe lovers لاnot غَيرَهُمُanyone besides them
إِنَّماonly الهالِكُthe one who perishes مَنwho قَدindeed عَشِقاfell in love
Mourn lovers, no one else;
Mourn lovers, and lovers alone
Only he who has fallen in love has truly perished.
Only lovers among us are dead
أَشرَقَshone المَيدانُthe square فَاِستَنكَرتُهُand I found it unfamiliar
كَيفَhow لاnot أَعرِفُI recognize تِلكَthose الطُرُقاthe roads
The square shone bright, and I found it unfamiliar.
The meadow shone, and I thought it strange
How could I not recognize those roads?
How could I not recognize those paths?
خَبَّرونيthey told me أَنَّهاthat she مَرَّتpassed بِهِby it
قُلتُI said مِنfrom ثَمَّthere أَراهُI see it مُشرِقاshining
They told me that she had passed by it.
They told me she passed by it
I said, 'That is why I see it shining.'
I said that's why it shines radiant
فَشَمَمتُso I smelled الريحَthe wind مِنfrom تِلقائِهاher direction
فَاِستَطارَand it flew apart القَلبُthe heart مِنيfrom me شِقَقاin fragments
So I smelled the wind from her direction,
I smelled the breeze from her direction
And my heart flew from me in fragments.
So my heart cracked and split into pieces
