أَلَمdid … not? تَرَyou see أَنَّنيthat I أَفنَيتُI used up عُمريmy life
بِمَطلَبِهاin pursuit of her وَمَطلَبُهاand the quest for her عَسيرُdifficult
Have you not seen that I have spent my life
In pursuit of her, though the quest for her is hard?
فَلَمّاso when لَمdid not أَجِدI find سَبَباًa means إِلَيهاto her
يُقَرِّبُنيbrings me near وَأَعيَتنيand thwarted me الأُمورُthe circumstances
So when I found no way to her
That would draw me near, and circumstances had thwarted me,
حَجَجتُI went on pilgrimage وَقُلتُand I said قَدindeed حَجَّتshe went on pilgrimage ظَلومٌẒalūm
فَيَجمَعُنيso it unites me وَإِيّاهاand her المَسيرُthe journey
I went on pilgrimage and said, “Ẓalūm has indeed gone on pilgrimage;
So the journey will bring her and me together.”
